| 517818 | 2007-01-20 06:28:00 | Hi Team Daughter is away so I thought I'd do some housekeeping on her computer. It's a cheapie Celeron 700, 256MB and PC Chips PC133 MB but it is only used for WP and email so that's usually quite fast enough for her, however she had complained about a slow-down in recent months. Running CCleaner and defragging the OS & data drives made it quite a bit snappier, then I cleaned out the dust etc. While doing that I noticed that the CPU fan was noisy, and to cut a long story short I decided to install a PIII-733 that I had lying around complete with heatsink and a good fan, on the basis that this would quieten it down and give her a worthwhile performance boost. I installed the CPU and started it up, but the first thing I noticed was the bios screen saying it was a PIII 433. I let it boot and sure enough, performance was definitely slower than the Celeron by a country mile. I rebooted and looked in the bios CPU page and there it said PIII 733MHz, CPU/Dram 66/100, CPU multiplier x10.5/x11. I can get it up to 650MHz by changing those settings to 100/100 and x7.5, but I don't know what the correct settings should be, and when I try other or higher values, Windows stops loading and throws a blue screen "Hardware Error" message. What settings should I use for 733MHz? Some of those that looked right in the bios and showed 733 MHz there actually gave 860MHz on the boot screen and threw the aforementioned error. The MB is good for 1.2 GHz CPUs so I'm not pushing it past its limits by any means. No pressure here, she doesn't come home until tomorrow!! Cheers Billy 8-{) |

| 517820 | 2007-01-20 07:04:00 | Haven't played with one of those for a while but pretty sure there will be a jumper on the mainboard to change the FSB from 100MHz to 133MHz. | CYaBro (73) | ||

This one is just fine for her needs. If you haven't got a helpful suggestion, go someplace else and boil your head while I get some sensible answers. Cheers Billy 8-{) |

| 517823 | 2007-01-20 07:47:00 | I would download the motherboard manual.I have the MB manual already, and it is in reasonably literate japanenglish but doesn't help. Cheers Billy 8-{) Since found that the multiplier in the PIII is supposedly fixed at 5.5, so I'm not quite sure where to go from there. |

Yep so you need to change the Front Side Bus to 133MHz - 133X5.5=733 approx. It may be an option in the BIOS but most of those older boards had a jumper. What is the model of the mainboard? The board may not even support the PIII-733. |

| 517827 | 2007-01-20 10:29:00 | I would knock you on your arse for that little man . Yeah yeah, violence fixes everything Metla, including your half-arsed response to a genuine query . You are the big man when you are dishing it out Metla, but you don't care for it when somebody fires it back at you . Dish out what you like, but you'll get it back with interest, bullies don't scare me . Now, if we can get back to my query, if you have a helpful suggestion I'd like to hear it, I have no doubt you know the answer and I'm not too proud to admit I'm sailing in what for me are uncharted waters, or to accept your advice . Cheers Billy 8-{) |
