517735 2007-01-20 03:32:00 Can anyone explain this?
Yesterday afternoon I switched on my 4 month old ASUS A6000KM (laptop) running XPPro. It took an age to boot up, well 6 mins. when I timed the second attempt.
Googling suggested that it was either an infection or too many apps. loading at Startup etc.
Assuming the worst I did 3 different scans, Housecall found some HTTP cookies, deleting them made no difference. The other 2 scans found nothing.
So lets investigate option 2. I have pared the Startup menu to a bare minimum anyway but still followed that course. I found references to an MS diagnostic tool BOOTVIS but explanations of its use weren't very clear. Since MS no longer supports it, I downloaded it from Softpaedia...well I tried to, twice. But there was no sign of a download. I even looked for a "balloon" message but nothing.
Something prompted me to check whether Bootup time had changed.
Hey Presto! ......back to 20 seconds.
A coincidence? One of Ms's usual glitches?
I'm intrigued.

517736 2007-01-20 07:25:00 Bootviz was used by Microsoft bofins to diagnose boot problems. Its not meant to cure boot problems, but the times Ive used the optimize option it has helped.

BTW M$ has never offered support for this tool since its release into the public domain.
