517667 2007-01-19 19:40:00 I have a Toshiba M30, a couple and a half years old now. Still does everything I need it to, but the 60GB HDD is getting pretty full (programs - chunky ones like SQL Server 2005, rather than data).

I found a Seagate 160GB HDD at Ascent which would be ideal as a replacement (and I could then use the existing HDD as an external storage medium, after reformatting it), but when I asked Ascent, I was told that this model of Tosh could only take a 40GB or 60GB drive.

I assume that is a motherboard limitation - does anyone know how I can make the laptop recognise the extra 100GB (short of replacing the laptop in it's entirety!) if I went ahead and bought the Seagate HDD?

[Note: if this is a limitation of the motherboard, why do manufacturers do this? Is it a conspiracy to make consumers buy a whole new machine rather than upgrading what they've got, or is there a more logical technological reason?]

517668 2007-01-19 20:24:00 Don't know if I believe that.
Toshibas website has as an upgrade product:

CMS 80GB Internal Hard Drive Upgrade
Compatible with Satellite M30,M35 Series
Part Number: TM30-80

WHich is more than Ascent says.
Ring Toshiba and ask them. The only reason it wouldn't is if the motherboard os so old its BIOS won't recognise bigger than a certain size - like old desktop PCs.

But I don't believe it - are they out of stock or something??

No Ascent weren't out of stock - I obviously just got hold of the wrong person... Ascent are usually very helpful in my experience.

517670 2007-01-22 08:16:00 Thanks for the advice pctek - rang Toshiba on the 0800 number tonight.

Had to wait about 10 minutes on hold getting an earful of Tosh advertising, but finally got hold of 'Kevin', who, after taking my laptop serial number so he could be sure of the model (it's actually an M33, not an M30!), told me that I could install a 120GB 5400rpm IDE replacement.

Not quite as big as I would have liked but at least it doubles my current storage. I suspect that if it would take a 120, then it would probably take a 160, but I won't gamble with that much hard-earned cash... :)

Found a Seagate 120GB at Ascent - ordered...
