518074 2007-01-21 19:44:00 We have just completed a web site for friends who are selling their property (using Adobe Go Live). I have put in lots of relevant keywords etc. & registered what we thought was a good domain name (www.nzcoastalproperty.co.nz), also submitted the site to Google & Yahoo and a few other search engines but the site is not attracting very many hits at all!
Is there anyone out there who can tell me how to increase the traffic or tell us what we are doing wrong as we not very experienced in this web design thing? Thankyou.

518075 2007-01-21 20:22:00 Site looks quite good & professional to me, but it still doesn't come up in a google search - how long ago did you submit to the search engines? give it a while before it could show (a few days to a week maybe)..... fnphoto (2434)
518076 2007-01-21 20:50:00 Change your coding style, 75% of your code is for the layout in tables, you could cut this down to 10% if you use <div> tags and css. This means you will have a higher content percentage in your code, less crap for google to sort through.

Submit to search engines wait about 3 months, if you have good code.
Pay search engines pop up the next day.

518077 2007-01-21 21:00:00 Google says it can take up to two weeks for submissions to appear.

Although in saying that, I worked on www.teatatubaptist.com and it was in Google within 48 hours of being online. I didnt submit it or anything :D

I think that may be because that site was posted here on PressF1 ;)

Thanks for thatRobb99. It looks as though I'm going to have to do a lot more swatting-up on web design...css?, <div>tags??? :-( lol

518080 2007-01-21 23:31:00 Have a look at the code on the page Chilling_Silence linked to, very simple, most of the code is the content itself. Rob99 (151)
518081 2007-01-22 01:41:00 Tables vs. div in SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) makes no difference, so doesn't matter which one you use.

However I prefer div design because you can make the code smaller and serving pages, especially to crawlers with leaner code does not show any dramatic performance decrease to all the other users about.

Just by looking at the first page, I can tell you it's not as good as it could be. You really want to make all your pages slightly informative (at least content to make it interesting) and to use key terms that people would search for, this is where you want to trap the users by telling them what they want to know about your site and the reason why this is the site is for them to use, if they're looking at buying nz coastal properties then they have come to the right place, but another thing is, you've got to make the listings interesting.

Your domain has NZ Coastal and Property (properties would have been preferred) in it, somehow use that in a sentence so searches for NZ, Coastal and Property will be ranked higher on your site. Be sure to also work in alternatives like New Zealand, Coast and Properties. Another trick is to save the web pages with names that contain keywords but also reflect the site, keep this within 32 characters though.

I did a NZ search for 'coastal properties' in google, and got http://www.coastalproperties.co.nz/

The keyword 'coastal properties' is picked by the domain name, and the wording in the description of the site, I notice your site does not have description or keyword meta tags. Coast has been used quite a lot too in this site, which gives it a strong relevance that the site has something to do with coasts, not only that, this would mean this site would rank high just searching for coastal.

So basically, target NZ Coastal and Property and you'll rank good in Google, make sure the title of the page also contains relevant keywords, just don't abuse it.

The site did not look professional to me, it does look like it was done on a WYSIWYG editor and also the site doesn't maintain the same template throughout or same colour scheme, it gets worse than better. You really do need to spruce the layout up a bit, especially for the type of site it seems to be.

There's probably a lot more that could be done, but at least this covers the basics and hopefully gets your hits up, but you do need to improve the design for the users you'd be getting.

Cheers,

KK

518082 2007-01-22 04:09:00 Put 'new zealand - northland' inside header tags ( <h1></h1>, <h5></h5> etc.) I think google likes that. jermsie (6820)
518083 2007-01-22 10:19:00 Thanks everyone for your helpful comments, especially Kame. I will do some more work on this site ASAP. By the way the design was taken from a modified Go Live template. Paul Ramon (11806)
