2007-01-19 13:13:00 | I have recently installed BitTorrent (the application) and am currently using D-Link 504G on ihug, but have discovered that nothing is coming through, even though the torrents work perfectly for other people . I have done some light reading on port forwarding, uPNP and all that jazz, but the Australian site I was reading failed to enlighten me . It was supposedly talking about my router, yet the pictures were all different and I didn't understand much about it . I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a "BT for Dummies with D-Link 504G and BitTorrent" crash course . Thanks heaps :)

You will need to forward the correct port, I don't know what ports Bittorrent uses as I dont use it. To forward, this is how I do it.. go to your browser and enter the router ip Then click on advanced user mode Click the Advanced tab at the top Then click on Port Forwarding You should be able to work out the rest :) |

2007-01-19 21:12:00 | You dont _have_ to enable port-forwarding, its totally optional, you just get faster speeds if you do :) Personally, I dont like the Mainline BitTorrent client as much as uTorrent.. many little reasons, but check out uTorrent, you might like it :) Try a file like this which has multiple seeders / leechers The more the better: linuxtracker.org Without port-forwarding, I immediately get 30-35KB/s on that torrent, you should be good to use it as a test, being only 49MB Its literally a matter of click and you're away :)

2007-01-20 09:06:00 | Thanks for the comment about uTorrent. I downloaded it and gave it a go just then, but there's no activity whatsoever on the torrents I'm testing out, including the one Chilling_Silence gave to me. Is there anything else that needs to be done? | muppet (11795) | |
2007-01-20 09:21:00 | Check to make sure it's not blocked by your firewall. Also, check out www.portforward.com for all your portforwarding needs

2007-01-20 09:38:00 | Check to make sure it's not blocked by your firewall . Also, check out www . portforward . com for all your portforwarding needs Apparently it was blocked off by my out-of-date NAV firewall . Bleh . I never knew it was still working . The torrents are downloading very well now, thanks heaps people  ** A happy camper runs off into the wild blue yonder . . . **

2007-01-20 11:21:00 | That's exactly why I don't rely on NAV anymore, a resource hogger in essence . I'm getting greedy now and want to speed up my BT downloads through port forwarding . I would like to get iHug's DNS server(s) and wonder if anyone would have it stashed in a handy location - or any handier alternatives to get this port forwarding thingee going . Cheers .

2007-01-20 11:29:00 | You don't need DNS servers to portforward, have them automagically configure, or use your router's ones. Just follow the info on the site I linked. | roddy_boy (4115) | |
2007-01-20 12:47:00 | I was just following what portforward . com had to say about my particular modem - it said "To setup port forwarding on this router your computer needs to have a static ip address . " On another page on the same site, it suggests that In order to set up a static IP, I need to know the Name Servers, which is another name for DNS servers, and that I can find out from my ISP about it . To be honest I don't really know or understand what I'm talking about right now - I just would like my BT download speed to be a tad faster, that's all :(
