518886 2007-01-24 07:40:00 I purchased an external hard drive case, with the hard drive separate. When set it up and plug it in, it goes through the installation process if it's in a new computer or hub but fails or stops (haven't seen this for a while so don't know). At the moment a "Mass Storage Device" displays in my device manager for about 15 seconds before disappearing.

Any ideas of what this might be?

I'm pretty sure it's not power as this case is drawing power through an adapter in the wall not the USB.

Thanks,
-Hugo

518887 2007-01-24 10:03:00 Make sure the hard drive jumper is set to Master / One drive only.
Some have a setting for Master with Slave present.
Also most are set to Cable Select as default.

518888 2007-01-24 10:08:00 Cable Select? Warhog (7975)
518889 2007-01-24 10:18:00 This is assuming the hard drive you are using is IDE...
Sorry didn't word my last post very well.
See if you can see a jumper on the hdd between the power connector and the data cable. It should be set to Master / Single drive.
What model hard drive is it?

518891 2007-01-24 10:23:00 It's a Barracuda, there're other numbers on this, not sure which is the mode; number. It's also set to cable select. Warhog (7975)
518892 2007-01-24 10:27:00 Have a look here (www.seagate.com ) to see how to set to Master / Single drive CYaBro (73)
518893 2007-01-24 10:29:00 Yea I found the diagram on the back of the HD, I'm just wondering how to get this black bit out. Warhog (7975)
518894 2007-01-24 10:35:00 I use a sharp knife or long nose pliers or even a long finger nail :D
You should see one side of the jumper has a lip on it. Pry it up on that side being careful not to bend the pins.
