518503 2007-01-23 06:12:00 Hi- new boy on the block. I saw a post in November (I think) where a person lost an active Icon in the toolbar section and could not recover it using the usual channels i.e. start/properties/taskbar/customise. I had a similar problem a few weeks ago and try as I might I just could not get that programme to start as it should. The programme was Firetrust Benign which came bundled with MailWasher Pro. The IT techie from FireTrust accessed the computer remotely but could not give me a fix. I see that the administrator points to a possible fix but that did not work either, it merely st***fed up my internet connection.
After a lot of to and fro the techie was of the opinion that there was some sort of "bug" in XP-well that's nothing new but I'm still back where I started- waiting or a reply from M/S!! The programme can be started manually from the desktop and minimised to the toolbar section and it all works fine: but does anyone have a similar problem and a way to work around this. I have a feeling that the problem started after a M/S update as it also affected my access to the HOSTS files, which have since been recovered. My apologies if this sounds a little nutty. And yes- I have run a virus check (Avast), Spybot, Spyware Doctor, CCLeaner, Ad-Aware Se Plus! I have a feeling the problem is a bug in M/S XP any solutions?
Regards Gordon

518504 2007-01-23 11:37:00 The problem is that you want it to start when the computer starts?

Just search startup to get to your startup folder and drag a copy of the icon from the desktop into it.

Welcome to PressF1, here's hoping you get some progress.

Microsof Updates should _not_ be touching your HOSTS file in any way??
What updates have you done recently?

518506 2007-01-23 23:01:00 Hi RBD & Chilling Silence-tried the drag & drop-no go. I watched the IT techie try and he got nowhere also. Only update was from Spyware Doctor & Avast but the problem arose prior to that. Haven't used any CD's for yonks. Problem arose right after a M/S update. Had a similar problem with MailWasher and M/S produced a "fix". They don't reply to my e-mails-not surprised really.

518507 2007-01-23 23:55:00 Sorry I can't help much, but It really sounds like you've got some sort of infection.

Also - it'd be a lot easier for folks to assist you if you made your problem a little clearer, and paraphrasing goes a long way to get people to read your book.

And personally I think you're daft to give remote access to your system to someone, no matter whom, unless you know and trust them personally.

Why on Earth you'd want or need Firetrust Benign is also beyond me. :groan:

518508 2007-01-24 01:48:00 hmmm.... I cant seem to keep my 'speaker' icon for volume on my toolbar. Once it goes into 'hide' mode i have to go to control panel to put the icon back onto the tray.... rob_on_guitar (4196)

Hi Greg-firstly, yes you are probably right in that I don't really need Benign but the fact is i have and it has caused no problems until now .
Secondly I have dealt with the people at FireTrust for over 3 years and yes i I do know this particular techie personally .
My apologies if the post seemed a bit disjointed but I had just taken 2 Codeine which do nothing for my though processes . To take you back a little way when I had MailWasher installed it ceased to function immediately after a M/S download . I was advised by FireTrust that it was due to this M/S update and M/S had put out a "fix" which restored everything back to normal .
Benign works alongside MailWasher as a filtering programme and I downloaded some e-mail normally one evening . During that period a M/S security update started downloading and was duly installed . The following morning Benign ceased to work . No matter what I did, uninstalling, reinstalling the programme refused to work as the HOSTS file could not be found . I eventually found the HOSTS file and Benign was duly reinstalled but neither I nor the techie could get it to launch on startup . I checked for viruses and spyware-using Spybot, AVG even resorting to bunging in my Norton 2005 Anti-virus disc (yeah I know-probably a waste of time anyway!) . No viruses or spyware was found . To my way of thinking it seems a little suspicious that both MailWasher and Benign ceased to operate correctly immediately after a M/S update . These are the only two programmes that have ever been affected . Don't ask me why my HOSTS file disappeared, I'm no expert and still on a steep learning curve but I did manage to get it back after a lot of trial and error .
I e-mailed FireTrust regarding this problem and the concensus seems to be that there is some sort of bug in M/S which causes the problem . Contacting Microsoft for a "fix" was as much use ass p*****ng at the moon-no response whatsoever .
My apologies for the long post . The problem in itself is only a minor irritation as I can launch Benign from the desktop, I merely wondered if people had had a similar problem and how they got around it or if they found a permanent fix .
Regards Gordon .

518510 2007-01-24 06:09:00 Do a system restore to before the update and quit downloading the MS screwups. You don't need them. pctek (84)
518511 2007-01-24 06:30:00 OK then pctek then what are the MS screwups all about?? And why does Norton advise you you not to allow "system restore"? Since the problem started, reinstated System Restore but it is only a recent restore point. Just as an aside how in the hell do you know what a M/S screwup looks like-for heavens sake the bu*****s don't even tell you what they are downloading or updating!! Is there any way of decoding their gobbldygook to see exactly what they are dumping in your computer?
Regards Gordon.

518512 2007-01-24 06:49:00 Hi Gordon.

I would disable the ability for MS to update your system at their wim. You can then periodically go to the MS upate site and check what new downloads they recomend as high priority and stay away from their other downloads entirely.

That doesn't help your problem with Benign but at least you wont be having MS messing up your system.
