| 518753 | 2007-01-28 08:38:00 | I tried again to download Open Workbench using IE v7 but it didn't work that time. So I downloaded Project KickStart3 from www.download.com which worked. (It's a 30 day trial) | barryk (8612) | ||
| 518754 | 2007-01-28 19:40:00 | Why do you really need OpenWorkbench. Can't you do your tasks without it? And by the way, ignore those guys who insist on getting you to learn to code your site in raw html - it's a waste of time, no matter what they say - a wysiwyg editor is far more efficient. |

| 518755 | 2007-01-28 23:17:00 | Why do you really need OpenWorkbench. Can't you do your tasks without it? I think my employment search is quite complex with many activities. I think that project management software would make it easier to manage and get things done. By any way, I need a way of organising these activities and getting them completed in a chronological order towards the end goal. Other ways to do this could be a spreadsheet or pen & paper? And by the way, ignore those guys who insist on getting you to learn to code your site in raw html - it's a waste of time, no matter what they say - a wysiwyg editor is far more efficient. My thinking is that a WYSIWYG editor is a quick way of generating HTML code for making webpages while doing raw HTML is more precise, i.e. it enables webpage details to be tweaked more finely. Or maybe a mixture of both would be the best way to go? ;) |

| 518756 | 2007-02-06 09:34:00 | I used OpenOffice.org Calc (open source spreadsheet software) to put together my GANTT chart for my employment search project. This solution seems to be working well. I have put the project plan on my wall above this desk. So I won't be using Open Workbench nor Project KickStart 3. I'm not sure if I have said before in this thread but I replaced the long CV with a two page CV. I am adding a list of services offered, which will probably make the CV three pages. This is because I have placed a "situations wanted" advertisement in tomorrow's paper with the webpage address pointing to the cv.pdf. I'll see if there is a good response to this ad. |

So have you had a response yet? Have you looked into working from home? Have you been to an interview yet? Your present CV looks better than the first one I saw. Your current website appears bland and does not get attention. I have just looked at the source code and it seems to be sadly lacking in keywords. Did you go to the interview on the 1st Feb? If so what was the result? It is not yet the 1st July 2007 so you may yet achieve your goal. I wish you luck. |

This is a personal thing which others and you may not agree with, avoid using bold lettering except for maybe headings, I'm talking about " Key Achievements" area. Also consistency ie again bold heading then normal font example I would use ( your CV) is the two subject areas Career Synopsis and Key Achievements, bold heading followed by normal font the other bold heading followed by bold bullet pointed text. I think the seek(www.seek.co.nz) site has some CV and interview tips on it maybe worth a visit |

| 518759 | 2007-02-17 22:01:00 | And by the way, ignore those guys who insist on getting you to learn to code your site in raw html - it's a waste of time, no matter what they say - a wysiwyg editor is far more efficient. Even if you use a WYSIWYG for making a site, you will produce a terrible result if you don't understand the basics of HTML. I have never seen a WYSIWYG editor produce a decent page without somebody with HTML knowledge setting up the basic page first. Things will go wrong, your code will fail to work in some browsers, and if you don't understand how HTML documents are put together and interpreted you will not be able to fix it. I would also argue that writing "raw" html is actually far more efficient when you know what you're doing. The skills used are also much more portable - I can use my knowledge of HTML using any text editor and will have full control over all available features. If I know how to use Dreamweaver this won't make me much better at using NVU (or any other WYSIWYG). I can use the same skills to write a basic page, create a template for a CMS or create page components for a web application. For site designs I would suggest visiting http://www.openwebdesign.org/ . They have a whole heap of good, standards compliant XHTML + CSS designs under open licenses. Most ask that you acknowledge the designer but other than that you can use them as you wish. |

| 518760 | 2007-02-17 23:12:00 | So have you had a response yet? Yes, however only one response and that was from another jobseeker, not an employer . So I think the "placing a situations wanted ad in a newspaper" promotion method is not effective . I think the ad was too small and that it didn't get people's attention like a very large sign outside a building would . Maybe putting in a visitors counter would tell me how many actually viewed my CV on the website? I think there are more effective methods to reach the target audience of employers . Have you looked into working from home? I have thought a little about it . I think a feasibility analysis needs to be done to see if working from home is a viable avenue of employment . And leads relating to working from home would have to be investigated and followed up to see if they are viable . Have you been to an interview yet? Yes, I have been interviewed six times since October 2005 . The last one was on Feb 1 this year . Your present CV looks better than the first one I saw . I think the revision got rid of a lot of unnecessary stuff . I haven't yet written out the achievements as modifications to the CV on the website . Your current website appears bland and does not get attention . Webpages have yet to be added to the website . The link in the newspaper ad pointed to the cv . pdf itself and not the website . The ad may still be online on the Herald website . I could have a look for it and provide the hyperlink to it if you like? I have just looked at the source code and it seems to be sadly lacking in keywords . What do you mean by keywords? Do you mean the HTML source is not properly done? Did you go to the interview on the 1st Feb? If so what was the result? Yes, I did go to the interview . The outcome is yet to be announced . It is not yet the 1st July 2007 so you may yet achieve your goal . Well, the clock is ticking :-) It looks like I'll need to improve and try different promotion methods if I am to achieve the 1st July aim . |

| 518761 | 2007-06-24 03:49:00 | To update you on progress . . . . That Feb 1 interview for an analyst role was unsuccessful however it led to temporary work which I have been in since mid March and still am in . I have been able to use the cashflow to build up funds for a 6 month search for better positions, e . g . analyst or advisor . This 6 month search will start in the first week of July . This will enable me to fully concentrate on my business development efforts where I have been unable to do so before . It's like selling a house, it takes time to get a sale . It was a decision of mine to first build up funds and miss the July 1 target of getting a fulltime, permanent role . About the individual website, I think I will take it down . I think the lesson for me is that to set up a services business, one needs to have a business plan written first and make the technology follow that, not the other way around . |

The best place for you to put your CV would be to register with Seek . co . nz in the IT section . Seek lets you set up an online CV where you can load your profile which you can send off when you apply for the jobs that are on Seek . It is free to register and also gives you the option of getting email or text updates when suitable job positions become available . It is much easier than building your own website just to host your CV . That is what I use for Mac op work . |
