518743 2007-01-23 23:40:00 I am going to set up an individual website at my homepage address.

I would like to put my CV on it. I can convert it to PDF format using OpenOffice's Writer, but I am not sure yet how to place the PDF file on the website. I do not know how to create a link on the webpage to enable people to view the PDF file.

I am also looking for two pieces of software as I can't pay for expensive software:
- Webpage or HTML editor to create/edit the webpages on the individual website. Recommendations?
- Project management software to help me manage a project with several work activities over a period of several months. I tried to download Open Workbench from the downloads section on www.openworkbench.org but nothing happened. I tried registering but still nothing happened. Are there recommendations for project management software products I can download?

Can PressF1 forums members help me with this?

Thanks in advance.

518744 2007-01-24 00:09:00 I suggest you use Google (www.google.com) to search for HTML tags, that will tell you what you need to know, that way you can learn about all the tags and you will benefit from it instead of just learning what you need/want

Notepad? :D I have heard of NVU (www.nvu.com) I have looked at it, seems OK. Best part of all it is FREE!!! :p

I am not sure about the project management software though.

Just my :2cents:

518745 2007-01-24 00:13:00 If you are building a website, I highly reccomend learning html/css instead of just using a wysiwyg.

You can learn here: www.htmldog.com, www.w3schools.com

I personally just use notepad++ for making website, but there are some other supposedly good programs such as NVU (www.nvu.com) or First Page 2006 (http:).

Good advice, however, many people just want to get the website online, and it doesn't really matter how good it looks to begin with. I would also recommend hiring a web designer, which can work out less stressful and time consuming.

518747 2007-01-24 08:53:00 I tried to download Open Workbench from the downloads section on www.openworkbench.org but nothing happened. I tried registering but still nothing happened. That website has a forum with a section on installation problems. Depending upon what your actual problem is, this thread (www.openworkbench.org) may be of assistance. :) Jen (38)
518748 2007-01-25 01:22:00 :) I have succeeded in putting my CV on my website homepages.woosh.co.nz however to access this PDF file, you'll need to click on the link near the bottom called "MY Data Analyst CV".

The website is very much still in the works, most of the second level webpages are blank. That's partly why I am trying to get project management software.

Thanks Jen the moderator for your advice to have a look at the thread on Open Workbench installation problems. I will try my IE browser and see if Open Workbench downloads this time.

By the way, I appreciate all the advice you PressF1 forum members have given me in this thread, the advice is very helpful.

I have read your CV in detail and now my brain hurts. I believe your CV is far too detailed for any prospective employer to go through. Seven pages is too long in my opinion. With a CV it is better to keep it short. I have received CVs which started, "I was born in a foreign country: The son of an abusive mum and dad and etc." Not really, but you need an attention grabber to ensure someone is actually going to read the CV. The employer will not want your whole life story in one CV.

An employer does want to know a few things and rightly so:-

1: Who you are and where to contact you.
2: Two recent Referees who can be contacted by phone.
3: Are you currently employed and if not why not.
4: Any convictions? ACC claims? Previous health issues if any.
5: Achievements are better mentioned rather than responsibilities.

The purpose of a CV is to get you an interview. So what makes YOU stand out from the crowd? You are not all wrong here as I note that the CV title is
"MY Data Analyst CV". This makes me think that you have more than one CV which is a good idea in so far as you could have "My Truck Driving CV", "My Dog Walking CV", "MY Programming in COBOL CV" and etc. You need to target the position you are going for.

I don't think you are dopey but I am going to repeat myself!!!

The purpose of a CV is to get you an interview!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as your Web Site is concerned I fail to see why you need Project Management software to put a Web Site together.

May I ask if you are hearing impaired? This comes through in your CV I think also.

It is sad to me that people over 60 or even younger do not get work due to age. I am 64 and have had the same employer for the last 10 years. This work is seasonal and so I work 9 - 10 months in a year.

It is also sad that some employers will not employ people with the skills they need.

Over to you. Sell yourself.

Thank you for your feedback. As I said, the website is still "in the works".

I will replace the long CV with a two page CV when I have edited it.

The project management software is not just for the website only, it is to manage all the work activities for my employment search project and to make sure that I complete these activities by deadline dates. My end goal is to get fulltime, stable longer term (e.g. permanent type) employment by the beginning of July 2007.

I am also looking at part time work or other work to build up towards this end goal.

Three of these work activities are:
1) Preparation for a job interview on Thurs 1st Feb.
2) Working out whether to put in an application for an advertised fulltime, permanent role.
3) Putting together a proposal for business services using my skills.

I tried again last night to download Open Workbench but to no avail. However, IE has updated itself to version 7 so I will try again to see if it works this time. Otherwise, I will try downloading project management software from elsewhere.

Yes, I am.

Try to look at things from the employer's point of view. If I were an employer, I would be concerned with things such as meeting deadlines, managing budgets and achieving business objectives.

I would say to focus on the positives. I think that is a way to demonstrate to employers that you can add value to their organisation.

Technological solutions can be a way to show employers how they would benefit from hiring you. The website is one way I am trying for promoting my skills to employers - I am following a marketing plan which I made.

So were you planning on advertising yourself with several CVs on the one web site? You probably need about four pages rather than two.

I did look at things from an Employers point of view when I posted.
For example, if you are deaf ( as you have admitted to ) then how are you going to get through an interview when the prospective employer asks a question?

I'm fairly sure you could probably work from home via Internet and Remote Access etc. Do you need to consult with other members of a team and will you do it through post it notes or email or Word tracking. How will you get on with other members of a team?

Once, long ago, I advertised for a person to blend coffee. He had school cert which I did not acheive.

The question I asked was, "We want to produce a blend of Mocha/Kenya coffee which is 80% Mocha and 20% Kenya. How many grams of each will produce this result for 1 kilogram?"

I would have thought 800 grams Mocha and 200 grams Kenya.

My last examination for Maths I was at 29%
Chemistry 95%
Physics 88%
English 93%

Do not give up. Be persistant

If I were going to employ anyone these days it would be a person whom has the ability, turns up, reliable, honest and has comprehension and language skills for whatever this person is employed for.

I wish you luck and if I needed your skills I would hire you.
