519103 2007-01-25 04:10:00 OK, annoying problem. I am working on a PC ruuning XP SP2. It has a dial-up modem, the modem was taking ages to connect, would hang for no reason and when it does connect it is at 28.8, even though the max is set to 115000,the line sounds OK.
So i bought a modem from DSE, standard PCI data/fax/voice put it in installed fine no problems. The only thing it wont do is dial out, you set it up with whatever number, it says dialling and then says failed to connect dialing attempt 2, 3... etc etc, sometimes it says number busy. I tried the ISP number as well as my cell phone it just refuses to dial. Anyway i ran all hijack this, spybot, xsoft and AVG and there is no funny business, i cleaned the registry too with CCleaner. Changed cables and tried all 3 PCI slots. I tried dialling out using hyper terminal, that said dialling then said number busy.
Anyway, put the old modem back in and it works (although its pretty dodgy and slow as mentioned above).
So i tried the new DSE modem on another machine and it worked first time!!
Now im all out of ideas, can anyone help???

TIA

519104 2007-01-25 04:22:00 The connection speed may have something to do with line noise, or depending on where this person lives. Get them to ring Telecom and get them to do a line noise check

I would go to control panel / phone and modem (if this is XP) and select the modem and click on diagnostics. See if it works here or brings up info.

It could be on the wrong com port. Or something is conflicting with the DSE modem, why it works fine on another computer. Look in device manager and see if there are any X's anywhere.

The only other thing that may have happened is like I found out when my old mobo died was the modem would connect but didn't stay online for more than a min at a time, and the NIC on the back of the case was also knackered.

It wouldn't / didn't work on a network. Then I figured out that the NIC prob had something to do with the modem problem. As both were stuffed.

They're both most probably linked to each other on the mobo.

519105 2007-01-25 04:40:00 Admittedly the poor connection speed could be due to line noise, and possibly due to the reason the modem can take a while to connect. The line did sound OK and with such a poor connection speed i would imagine the line noise would be noticeable to the human ear.

With regards to the ports, there are no conflicts within the device manager everything is A OK. When i select the modem in the control panel and have a look at the modem the diagnosic does not report any errors and the device is working properly (apparently).

I was sort of coming to the conclusion that the motherboard might be on the way out, but the fact another modem works OK makes me think otherwise.

Once again speedy, thanks for being speedy

519106 2007-01-25 04:48:00 The other PC this DSE modem works OK in, I take it is in the same house and used the same line, as the PC that doesn't work?

Or is this other computer in another house / using another / a different phone line?

If both are in the same house, and connected to the same phoneline, are there any extension cords for this phone?

519107 2007-01-25 05:09:00 The other PC is in a different house (my house). So using the new modem with the new cable everything is OK.
The old modem (in the other house) dials out OK. The new modem (using both the old and new cable) doesn't dial out at all.

519108 2007-01-25 05:15:00 The only other thing, I can think of why it doesn't dial out is that phone may have something like call waiting or something on it?

And u may have to type in *52, I think it is to disable it then the # after it.

519109 2007-01-25 05:24:00 There is no call waiting, which wouldn't matter as i called (tried to call) my cellphone with no luck. So maybe its the mobo?? Are there any things like external dial-up usb modems as an alternative? borax (7078)
519110 2007-01-25 05:36:00 Yes there is, I understand the external COM ports are best thou. Assuming they work with XP. Nomad (952)
519111 2007-01-25 05:39:00 If the line test is bad Telecom would fix that and should fix it to the satisfactory level. Careful, I mentioned would and then should :D Nomad (952)
519112 2007-01-25 05:55:00 There maybe serial modems which can be pretty dear.

I cant say I've seen USB dialup modems, only ADSL modems.

BUT, if USB adsl modems are bad, I wouldn't bother getting a USB dialup modem, if there were any around.

I would just replace the mobo, at least if u buy another modem internal or external, it'll work.

Only other thing if u havent tried is try all the PCI slots. If u haven't yet.

I would also check whether PnP in on YES in the BIOS. It may or may not make a diff.
