1411140 2015-11-09 17:20:00 Fry's electronic is selling a i7 4790K with a motherboard that only takes 1333/1600 memory. Isn't the idea of the "K" to overclock so you can use higher speed memory. Can I overclock it using 1600 memory? lostsoul62 (16011)
1411141 2015-11-09 18:45:00 The speed of the CPU and the speed of the memory are set by different multipliers of the base clock (100 MHz) as I understand it

I would check the MB specs to see if it supports XMP (extended memory profile) and what speeds are listed

My z170 MB is officially (ie according to the Intel chipset) limited to 2133 MHz memory but I run it at 2400 MHz just fine.

1411142 2015-11-09 20:34:00 Memory speed only has a very minor effect on overall performance anyway, nowhere near what a faster CPU or even hard drive can do for you (there are exceptions for certain applications). More important is the chipset, the cheaper chipsets generally do not support overclocking, and if they do it's an unofficial feature added by the OEM and not sanctioned by intel. We could maybe tell more if you mentioned what motherboard it is.

The overclocking feature of the "K" series CPU is that they have an unlocked multiplier allowing you to change the clock speed of the CPU, this is completely separate to overclocking the RAM. You can overclock it independant of RAM speed, unless you play with the base clock which overclocks both but is not necessary to overclock a K series CPU
