1403775 2015-06-28 17:40:00 Bought an older car for something to repair and get back on the road.
Driving over to Tokoroa on Thursday morning to tow it home I hit some black ice (or maybe a blow out) and creamed the van good. Not worried that it wasn't insured but really pissed that I had just filled the tank not 10 minutes before.

Anyhow, the car key was in the van and after the accident we cant find it. Now I have no way of getting into the car. If I could, I could get the lock number and have another key cut.
There is no spare key.
Short of smashing a window to get in, any one got any ides I haven't thought of. In my misspent youth I was pretty good at breaking into cars but this one has me stuffed.
It is a 1995 Mazda Capella.

1403776 2015-06-28 20:12:00 I have opened 3 locked car doors last few years using a solid coat hanger wire. Based on the J shape. The trick is to reshape/deform the J shape and the straight part. So maybe a "double" J hook part (bend it twice - bottom flat then hook). But mainly to bend the lower portion of the straight part out of plane - and face it towards the outside as you slide the wire down between the window and panel. This is because the connecting handle to lock door rods are generally recessed within the door. Don't yank too hard inwards- you may pop the rod off it's handle plastic reaining clip.

Reshaping - the wire is key (sorry - pun) here. "Should" work. Another DIY way, is have a semi long/out of plane anchor shape plate with hooks shaped/cut in. Have seen it work with son's mate, a part time towie.

1403777 2015-06-28 21:36:00 I guess you don't belong to the Automobile Association, they can get into a car with a devise that is slipped between the top of the door and car body then inflated allowing a wire devise to be freely fed through to operate either the door catch, central lock button or even the boot release Lawrence (2987)
1403778 2015-06-28 22:18:00 Revisit your misspent youth! I guess Mangakino doesn't have a Mazda dealer or a locksmith eh. You don't really have a lot of options. I hope though that it is not an electronic key. Richard (739)
1403779 2015-06-28 22:20:00 Ring the local towie. $20 might get him to open it. Maybe look harder in the van! Bryan (147)
1403780 2015-06-28 23:11:00 Any Tokoroa ten year old should be able to do that for you for a couple of $10 notes. Count your fingers afterwards. R2x1 (4628)
1403781 2015-06-29 18:50:00 Many thanks. Got it open with the bent wire. Pulled the lock out and got the number off it and a new key. tut (12033)

Well the scrap man got $100 worth of Petrol and got $120 for the van which didn't go far for paying the towie.

First accident in 52 years of driving. How embarrassing.
