1403888 2015-06-30 22:32:00 In other words, Mr Muldoon helped us into our first home with a gift of 25% of the purchase price.
Today, a similar house would be $400k. So if Key were to copy Muldoon he would have to provide a gift of $100k. Instead Key's assistance is of the order of $10k
Yes, we have become a much less caring society. And today good jobs are scarce and wages lower AND we make students pay for their education!

Ive got to call BS on that. Wages were much lower back then . Look at how much builders, plumbers etc make now compared to back then .
I remember minimum wage being $6 , and most goods costs alot more (except housing) .
Sure some things are relatively alot more expensive to Joe Av now, power, education, health/doctor/hospital costs

Lets not forget NZ was literally a basket case when Muldoon & previous govts were done with it. We ranked 2nd to last in the OECD, NZ was insolvent.Broke, on its knees .
NZ couldnt afford petrol imports so they came up with careless days (nothing to do with a petrol crisis btw) .
Its completely unrealistic to expect $100k govt handouts to buy homes. Where do you possibly think that money would come from, thin air it seems .Yep , lets copy the example of Greece & spend spend spend .

+1.

Middle class welfare isn't a sign of a caring society any more than cooperate welfare is.

1403890 2015-07-01 02:52:00 Flick them the government shouldn't be involved in managing houses for people who cant manage their own lives properly. My advice to state house tenants dont do drugs, get tattoos, dont smoke, dont give church donations, dont gamble a cent, dont drink, dont own cars, dont have anymore than 2 kids, dont live on fizzy drinks, chips and takeaways.

I agree with this, all state houses do is create areas where nobody wants to buy a house because the peasants dont know how to look after anything that they dont have to pay for.

Are you saying that not a single person in a state house is worth anything, or is ever going to make anything of themselves? What a sad life you muse lead to hold such views :(

John Key came from a state house don't forget - and whatever you might think of him as a politician, he definitely proves you can come from a state house to live a successful live, making a positive contribution to society.

You were doing quite well there Nick until the part in bold.

he has done well coming from a state house no doubt about it, making a positive contribution however i'm not convinced.

In another time such people were called Untermenschen, how ironic

john key is making a hugely positive contribution to society, all such people are. he's just not making a positive contribution to the future of this civilization, the future of humanity nor the future of this planet.

he probably wishes he could, probably can't see how to and continues with his place in the current paradigm making the most of what he can for himself.
