People who take unfair advantage of our largesse should be put to the stake.

Both statements entirely correct, two completely different types.
However, who gets to decide which are which?

You sound so sure of things, so let it be thee.

Not so sure that I would relish a job like that, Cic, but thanks for the offer.

I imagine that our mutual friend Z would, though.

Only an idiot would assume that.......

It seems to me to be an idea that belongs in the waste paper basket.

its a fairly silly idea. but they may have dug themselves into a hole.
i had a look at some that where up for sale, no basic maintenance done to them, they are offloading them before they become a massive cost to repair.

the simple problem is, they sell state houses, the tenants are forced to pay market rates. they can't afford it so social welfare pays them accommodation benefit. in effect the new home owners are making profit from the taxpayer. whenever you have a subsidized income like that, the prices go up. the insulation scam is perfect example of that ie govt pays $1k of it and prices all shot up $1k.

then there is social cost. there is land lord attitude of they can always go rent somewhere cheaper. so you simply get poor people forced into cheaper areas.
unfortunately when you have a group of people like that life goes downhill.
one thing social welfare did years ago was to get rid of 'dole days' and to spread state homes among the community, to avoid class segregation.
just like overseas examples you end up with 'beneficiary streets' where everyone is on a benefit and no surprise that the crime rate is horrific.

1403883 2015-06-30 06:56:00 Selling is the best way for the government to get out of social responsibility.
Similarly selling the power stations, now that dads and mums are shareholders, they want return on investment. Services to the public is further down the list of objectives.
It is the corporate world nocking on the door, i mean they are half way through.Wake up! Look to USA and see how well the generally public is doing. Corporate health and housing will be the fast slide to serious health problems and poverty.:-(

1403884 2015-06-30 09:57:00 When we bought our first house in the 1970s we saved in a government home-ownership account and after a few years they gave us $7k to top up our saving. We bought a rundown $30k 3BR house within walking distance of Wellington CBD.

In other words, Mr Muldoon helped us into our first home with a gift of 25% of the purchase price.

Today, a similar house would be $400k. So if Key were to copy Muldoon he would have to provide a gift of $100k. Instead Key's assistance is of the order of $10k

Yes, we have become a much less caring society. And today good jobs are scarce and wages lower AND we make students pay for their education!

So of course we should provide social housing today. Or help first home buyers with a realistic gift
