1403558 2015-06-24 21:55:00 Good on you for supporting illegal broadcasting by circumventing the system and pirating your television.
I dont pay for sky as i believe it is too expensive but i can see where they are coming from.

Where do you come up with this "pirating television"?? I pay for i!! Just because it's not coming thru a NZ monopoly NZ broadcaster is irrelevant..

That depends on what you are watching.
if you are viewing Netflix via VPN to watch US only programs then its not strictly above board.

1403560 2015-06-24 22:17:00 Good job
Sky pay for the rights to have it in NZ

Yep. Thats what everyone wants to ignore.
SKY, TVNZ etc paid for exclusive rights in this country. Netfix etc didnt pay & dont have right to show some programs in NZ .
We are, stealing from Sky, TVNZ etc. Yes its is theft , of property rights.

No one has the God Given right to view whatever they want, despite how they want to spin it.
If its a last gasp of death from Sky etc is irrelevant, we have zero right to access that stuff . If it was 100% OK, netflix wouldnt make any attempt at geo-blocking.

I bought some stolen goods, I paid for it so that makes it OK. :-(

Where they are coming from is not as important as where they are going to, and whether pitchforks will be involved.
To be fair, Sky have the potential to improve the country they take so much from. (The 5th Nov' next seems an appropriate time.) Possibly every millennium or two they do a good deed, just not lately
Sky from the national viewpoint is about as logical as removing the accelerator pedal from cars to be replaced with a sensitive pad on the bonnet that controls the power applied and protects the business interests of buggy whip manufacturers. :p

1403563 2015-06-24 23:25:00 A lot of people try to justify the various ways they view content they're not supposed to but I don't believe many of them really think it's totally legit. You know you are breaking the rules and you are just trying to convince the world it's ok. There's this perception that it's not piracy and it's hurting nobody but most know that's simply not true. I've been known to do it myself but I don't pretend it's anything but what it is. Someone has to pay for content ultimately or it won't get made.

I don't have sky and I don't use VPN's or global mode, if I want to break the rules I'll do it properly and use one of the methods of downloading pirated shows to watch. Global mode just makes it seem a bit more legitimate but it's not really, you're still taking the revenue from the rightful owners of the distribution rights whether you pay someone else for it or not.

Currently I'm paying for netflix and trialling lightbox free for a year and still hire blu-rays. Assuming I keep both services that's as much as I'm willing to spend on pay TV, there'd have to be an amazing service to extract another cent from me (all new release movies on release day for one monthly fee anyone?). So if I access anything else while I acknowledge it's wrong I also know they would not be making any money out of me anyway.

These new services and various forms of piracy must be hurting sky but it must be hurting free to air TV as well, I haven't watched freeview in months, the TiVo has been merrily recording things the whole time and I have no Idea of what's even on it. I don't imagine advertisers will continue paying for adds nobody sees if too many people are like me.

1403564 2015-06-24 23:39:00 TBH, I tried netflix but didn't like it so bought Maige TV.
I tried netflix for 2 months but didn't much like it.

I'll never buy sky. They are a rip off and dont deserve to sue Global Mode.
Sky is anti competitive, Their system is ancient .

Im now watching more youtube than TV. Often the TV doesnt even get turned on .
Even youtube is turning into a TV substitute, with professionally made content thats often better than whats on old school TV .

Just as families no longer gather around in the lounge listening to to the wireless, broadcast TV will never be what it once was
Just too many other options for our personal entertainment .
Sky , TVNZ etc will eventually have no choice but to offer up all their content via online streaming, via a descent service.
The smart thing for TVNZ, TV3 ,would be to partner up with netflix now (before its too late) & negotiate some sort of % or advert delivery .

This TV piracy debate is nothing new, it goes back to when VHS/BETA machines started to get affordable. There were lawsuits being flung around back then as well.

1403566 2015-06-25 00:09:00 One other thing. Some geoblocked content was paid for by that countries local taxes . We paid nothing towards it.
Watching that is stealing
