1403346 2015-06-22 20:19:00 Due to the incredible menu of things it won't do, I wonder if a landline phone is even marginally qualified to be called a phone any more?

1403348 2015-06-22 21:42:00 You could get a 2Talk land line with a local numbner for $11 / month.. paulw (1826)
1403349 2015-06-22 22:28:00 Well now, am I any the wiser?

Some say yes and some no, I will avoid changing things a little longer.

1403350 2015-06-22 22:42:00 I'm ignorant of such things but I hang onto my landline not only for the use of the telephone but for my PC and its modem. If I didn't have a landline, how would I access the Internet? Not and idle question, I really do not know the answer! Bryan (147)

If you only have old school dial up, you need the landline. ADSL intenet doesnt need the phone/landline connected. It does need the line though...

In theory, you have your phone disconnected & keep only the ADSL/internet connection . Saves you some money. Perhaps.
Its called Naked Broadband, Im not sure if Spark/telecom will do this yet for home users.
Pretty sure you still have to pay a line charge, so not sure if the savings are much.
Other ISP/internet providers will provide internet only (no phone) . Some internet providers will provide a VOIP phone service, thats a phone that uses the internet
connection .

The 2Talk service looks interesting, they have a pay as you go system, so its free for incoming calls (pay for outgoing calls). Must be a catch , would be perfect
for those with mobile phones wanting to ditch the landline.

1403353 2015-06-22 23:52:00 I've kept a landline partly because it's bundled and partly to use an exchange-powered phone in an emergency. It also gives me a chance to lie to the political pollsters ;)

But I tried the exchange-powered phone just now and there's no dial-tone. (When plugged in. The other one has dial tone when plugged in)

Has exchange-powering been dropped?

1403354 2015-06-22 23:56:00 Have you looked at UFB through Slingshot(assume you are still with them) www.slingshot.co.nz

Home line is included but Fibre so you will have some problems if you have a monitored alarm and also as mentioned no phone in the event of a power failure but most have a cell phone

Thats fine until the cell phone needs charging and the cell sites go down after exhausting the backup power.
