1411037 2015-11-06 02:22:00 Hi folks

I was quite happily using the Chromecast app on my Nexus 9 tablet, running the current version of Android OS until about two weeks ago. There was an update to both Android OS and the Chromecast app about the same time as it all stopped working.

Now when I try to run Chromecast, it simply stops - it won't fire up at all.

I then tried installing Chromecast on my laptop, and whilst it fires up, it cannot make a connection with the 1st generation Chromecast dongle on the TV.

Is anyone else having problems? It appears as though users aren't happy on the PlayStore page for the app, but no-one seems to be reporting quite the same fault as mine - simply stopping.

I have located a site that has apks of earlier versions of the app, and have tried to download them to see if I could replace the current version. Whilst the download proceeds normally and shows that the same size file has been downloaded as that listed, the downloads never actually finalise.

Thanks for any advice.

John

1411038 2015-11-06 03:30:00 Mine is still working just fine. Chromecast 1, Nexus 9 Marshmallow.
I would try removing the Chromecast dongle from the TV and switching everything off and then rebooting and setting it all up again from scratch.

1411039 2015-11-06 21:43:00 My two original Chromecasts, my new Chromecast, and my Chromecast audio all work just fine :)
Tested with Android-5.1.1 on my Z5 and Android-6.0 on Marshmallow on my Z3

1411041 2015-11-07 08:55:00 Well, thanks guys. I have tried every permutation and combination of uninstalls, reinstalls, reboots etc imaginable, resetting the dongle, turning off web protection, blah blah. The Chromecast app simply refuses to start - there must be some conflict somewhere.

Finally, with no progress in sight, I resurrected my old Nexus 7 which had earlier versions of all software. I had to give it a full charge because it has been unused for several months, but when it started up, I got Chromecast working with only one initial minor problem. Google said it was an outdated version of Chromecast and it needed to be updated or it wouldn't work properly. I just refused to update it and it looked like it would fail to start, but by then it had picked up the dongle and proceeded to set up.

So now I can cast from the old Nexus 7, but it remains to be seen whether the dodgy battery will hold up.

Thanks for your comments - however, I am sure by the number of people leaving negative feedback on Play Store that something has gone phut with Google's updates.

1411042 2015-11-20 20:51:00 For what it is worth, I finally fixed Chromecast on my Nexus 9. There were some permissions turned off in Google Play Services, and Gmail app kept complaining about them. I tried turning them on and Chromecast app now starts and works.

However, this remains a mystery:
1. How did they get turned off?
2. Why are the following permissions relevant to either Chromecast or a Nexus 9, which is not a phone? Body sensors, SMS, Phone.

They were the only ones turned off, and turning them on stopped the GMail nagging and fixed Chromecast. Go figure, as they say.

Thanks for your help. John.

1411043 2015-11-22 03:00:00 Cheers John,
Thanks for posting your cure to resolve your issues, not everybody who manages to fix problems to the cure they found worked for them.
And of course it may not resolve other issues with peoples toys and equipment but sure helps to eliminate.

Cheers John.
