520351 2007-01-29 09:03:00 Dear all, say I have got two laptops which have the bluetooth feature. Is it possible for me to setup a "bluetooth-adhoc" connection between these two laptops? Thanks for any reply.

Cheers :)

520352 2007-01-29 09:29:00 You could try it, looks like it can be done but whether it'll be stable or drop often is another matter.

And it may depend on the range.

Both may have bluetooth but does it say both will work on a network, or is there software / drivers for both so u can configure both as network cards?

520353 2007-01-29 10:41:00 a lot of bluetooth "dongles" or "cards" or whatever have a "PAN" (personal area network) function built in, which should help you with setting up a network.

Edit after some googling:

A Personal Area Network typically covers the few meters surrounding a user's workspace and provides the ability to synchronize computers, transfers files and gain access to local peripherals like printers and a range of pocket hardware. A technology like Bluetooth may enable wireless PAN.

so yeah, you would get a network, but it would be nether long ranged, or fast.

520354 2007-01-29 11:35:00 I know on the mac I can share my internet connection through BT, i presume windows will be the same plod (107)
520355 2007-01-29 13:48:00 Guessing if both notebooks have blue tooth they will also have wifi, why not connect them ad hoc. Rob99 (151)
520356 2007-01-29 22:30:00 I haven't actually got the laptops yet, so I can't try it out at the moment, Speedy.

Rob, the notebooks do have WiFi, but they are going to be used for other laptop-to-laptop adhoc connections.

Cheers :)

520357 2007-01-29 22:38:00 they are going to be used for other laptop-to-laptop adhoc connectionsAt the same time? Rob99 (151)
520358 2007-01-30 15:13:00 Yes it's possible to do that like for example in this article (www.geekzone.co.nz) That's was one of the reasons why we blocked use of Bluetooth devices in our secure department with Desktop Authority (http://www.scriptlogic.com). Brandon Metcalf (11831)
520359 2007-01-31 03:51:00 At the same time?
Hi Rob. Let me clarify what I have in mind.

Say, I have got two laptops (A and B) and one desktop computer. The two laptops have WiFi and LAN ports, while the desktop computer only has a LAN port. I intend to wire them together according to this fashion:

Laptop A <= WiFi Adhoc => Laptop B <= Crossover LAN => Desktop computer.

However, since the laptops have Bluetooth capability, therefore it prompted me to think of the possibility whether they can be wired in an equal adhoc fashion as WiFi's.

Thanks for the article, Brandon. :D

Another question: Do I need to establish a network bridge between Laptop A and the desktop computer so that LAN games involving these three machines can be played?

Cheers :)

520360 2007-01-31 04:16:00 I would use WIFI not bluetooth it'll be more reliable.

Unless the bluebooth can be networked in adhoc or other, it wont work anyway.

It would most probably work better if u do bridge the connections.
