519912 2007-01-28 00:55:00 Hi, I just tried to play an AVI file type on Windows Media Player 11 and it came up with the usual cannot find codec for this file. How do I fix this? Thanks.

519913 2007-01-28 01:22:00 Most likely it is a divx / xvid / mpeg4 of some sort.

There are codec packs you can get but I have found that most, if not all, of those type of avi files will play with the Xvid codec.
Get it from here (www.koepi.org)

The other option is to use VLC from http://www.videolan.org/
That plays pretty much anything you throw at it!

519914 2007-01-28 21:53:00 If you don't know which codec the .avi uses, download GSpot (www.headbands.com) and it will give you the "FourCC (http://www.fourcc.org/)" that identifies what codec was used to compress the video.

As suggested though, VLC will play most anything and if you don't like that, get something like K-Lite codec pack and that should sort the missing codec problem out.

That would be because it's not Apple right? :D

519920 2007-08-11 22:03:00 That would be because it's not Apple right? :D It is actually because it doesn't install a player... Just means more unnecessary applications to clutter a PC...

VLC will play just about anything, I have found this the most versatile. Plays quicktime, divx, wma, mps the works Yes, VLC will play basically anything (even without the codecs), but I have found that it is not really a media player to the standard of something like WMP... mainly due to lack of media library :2cents:
