519817 2007-01-27 22:47:00 Hi Guys

I am trying to set up a simple 2 computer home network using XP and two fairly recent PC's.

I am on the net using an ADSL router.

I am using the ethernet connector on each PC's motherboard.

I have run the Network set up Wizard on both PCs and have shared a few folders

But I cannot acess each machine through My Network Places.

But I can access the internet from both machines ! (so they ARE connected)

If I click on their icons I get the following sort of messages.

MShome (workgroup name) is not accessible
You may not have permission to use this network resource !
Contact the network administrator

Any help would be much apppreciated.

Kind regards

519818 2007-01-27 22:51:00 More details will be required to work this out.

How are the computers connected to the ADSL router, what sort of ADSL router is it (Make and model). ?

What does "ipconfig /all" return on each of the computers ?

519819 2007-01-27 22:58:00 NEVER use the Network Wizard. Its as useless as **** on a bull. Speedy Gonzales (78)
519820 2007-01-27 23:03:00 Can you ping each of the machines from the other. What firewalls are you running on them ? gcarmich (10068)

Yes I agree
I am an old Dos Head from way back and have always preffered to do things "manually". But don't know where to do this.

I set a few networks up way back on Windows 3.11 but this has me stumped.
I have seen quite a few suggestions on Google etc, but they all look very advanced and I don't want to attempt any of these as my desired setup is so basic and both are fairly new XP installations so it should work quite easily? !

519822 2007-01-27 23:22:00 As Gmarmich said are there any firewalls on either?

And can they ping each other?

519823 2007-01-27 23:22:00 XP pro or home?, if home, enable guest a/c and create shared folder, if pro, you need a like a/c on both pc's w/ same udername & pw SolMiester (139)

No you don't . If simple file sharing is enabled/ticked, all u do is create a folder and share it . (on Pro) .

If simple file sharing is unticked you would / may have to do this .

If there are no firewalls etc stopping things, thing should work .

You don't have to enable guest a/c either .

Yes - for me it was ZoneAlarm that was causing the problem . Disabled that (and disconnected from the Net) and all was well . :)

Is this any help to you (and me ?)

I have a Dynalink ADSL2+ router (with only one ethernet port) . This goes into a Netcom 8 port switch and a Cat 5 cable goes to each computer .

I use ZoneAlarm and think I have turned Windows Firewall off .

I will now turn Zonelarm off .
