| 519837 | 2007-01-28 03:21:00 | Has the machine that you can't ping still got a firewall installed and running ? | gcarmich (10068) | ||
| 519838 | 2007-01-28 03:24:00 | SP2 , or XP has nothing to do with it . If its configured properly, it'll work for the net and a network . Zonealarm whether its disabled or uninstalled can still cause probs with the net or a network . Which is why I got rid of it ages ago . |

| 519839 | 2007-01-28 04:24:00 | HI Guys Thansk for the latest 2 replies. I can now ping both machines I can access the net on both But I can't access files on the other machines I have shared some folders on each computer. I get Network Path Not found on both machines even when trying to find shared folders on the same machine ! I will un-install Zonealarm, but do not understand as it is such a popular program. But Speedy you say even if I uninstall it, it will still cause problems ? Regards Digby |

| 519840 | 2007-01-28 04:47:00 | Uninstall ZA altogether and install something like Comodo (www.personalfirewall.comodo.com) Its free. If u decide to install it on both PC's once its installed, reboot, then right mouse on its icon, on the taskbar / open. Then go to the network monitor, click on tasks, The wizard on the bottom, click a define a new trusted network. Then next, whatever network adapters appear, select them then click on next again then finish (if there's more than 1 adapter do this procedure twice). ZA even if u uninstall it, leaves traces of its crap in the system. But if u install something else, it may fix it. With Comodo it may also ask u to go to their site and put ur email addy in so they can send u an activation key. Follow what it says, and then go to where it asks u to enter the key in, then copy and paste it in. |

| 519841 | 2007-01-28 04:52:00 | I don't want to confuse the issue further, but when for some reason file and printer sharing wont work with the TCP/IP protocol, installing IPX/SPX protocol is a 'sure fire' method to get file sharing working . It is explained here, there is also troubleshooting . . practicallynetworked . com/sharing/xp/network_protocols . htm" target="_blank">www . practicallynetworked . com There is also just a possibility of 3rd party utility software modifying the network access policies without asking . It happened to me once . |

| 519843 | 2007-01-28 05:02:00 | Good to hear things are working now! Umm If u have a hardware firewall, sometimes its good enough. Well maybe even better than a software one. (Anything is better than XP's default firewall). As this only stops incoming NOT outgoong traffic. But, yup up to u if u want to try Comodo. It's pretty good for a free firewall. But it can get annoying sometimes (like most firewalls), when it pops up asking if u want a program to have access. Another annoying feature of ZA and Symantec's firewall is sometimes they stop their proxy service, which will also stop u from browing the net. Until u restart the service. |

I see nowhere here where you went into ZA's Firewall/Zones and added the trusted IP range of 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254. Without telling ZA you trust this range of addresses ZA is doing exactly what you installed it for! |

Without telling ZA you trust this range of addresses ZA is doing exactly what you installed it for! I accept that (thousands of users must be using it OK). I had thought about re-installing it ontop of my now going network. I remember looking at the area of the program zones etc, but it is not exactly user friendly is it ? You can imagine my feelings about ZA after 10 days of complete frustration. Regards Digby |

| 519846 | 2007-01-28 22:12:00 | Digby, I understand your frustration but you weren't the main target! And, no, networking is not a user friendly topic . Hope all is well, now, with whatever firewall . Cheers . |
