520034 2007-01-29 08:41:00 I also followed the advice for Happy Harry but could not find the relevant files - no such directory existed.

520035 2007-01-29 09:09:00 Does this also occur on the other computer? Jen (38)
520036 2007-01-29 15:56:00 to test if 'IE is screwed' install firefox and see if the problem persists......if it does then it's 'global' not browser specific.... drcspy (146)
520037 2007-01-29 18:14:00 Yes, the other PC, a laptop, can't load the com pages too

I use FF, not IE - but I did try IE as well - same result.

Last night, fairly late for this old geezer, I checked the Devices part of the system, saw the three drivers missing:

Ethernet controller
Multimedia Audio Controller
Raid Controller
Now because I saw the multimedia thingie, I just focused on that but reading the mobo manual, it seems that the other two is acually more important and may be the reason for all the above failures. Found a website in Taiwan (for the VIA mobo)(yes, it did load the site with a .tw extension) and is busy d/l'ing all the drivers missing. Installed the Audio Controller driver I d/l'ed and the yellow questionmark disappeared so I presume it's OK.

I am very proud of myself, not having the correct disc (remember I inherited the PC off my son) and somehow maybe getting at the root of the problem. My question - can the above two drivers be the the evil twins that cause all the problems?

I am still not sure - because the Lappie also loads .com pages not at all, and this tells me it's a modem/router problem, but the big question is - do you ubergeeks think I'm on the right way?

Sorry for all the mess - and no, I checked again, I apparently did NOT delete any useable program when I deleted the games, coz the son had printouts of the Add/Remove listings and all I removed were games. How else does things like this happen then?\

520038 2007-01-29 21:17:00 Or should I try and get a local guy to check the problems out? I don't know a lot of Ubergeeks tho'

520040 2007-01-30 07:02:00 So each computer has its own access to the router and does not rely on one of them being turned on so that it can gain internet access via it? In that case, the fault must be with either the router or the ISP.

Your ping attempt to microsoft.com failed because they block pings (unsuprisingly  ).

Trying pinging the two address below and see what happens:
64.233.187.99
and
google.com

You can also try to reset your modem back to defaults by locating the reset pinhole on it. Instructions should be in your user manual on this as well. You may need to re-enter your ISP settings after this.

520041 2007-01-30 08:17:00 Pinging 64.233...... - min 302 max 316 avg 310 0%loss
Pinging Google - more or less the same

520042 2007-01-30 08:24:00 Hmm ... better make sure the google.com is one of the .com websites that fail to load before going further. Try loading that into your browser and see what happens.

By pinging both the actual IP of a website and its "proper" name I am trying to see if it is a DNS issue.

Wouldn't hurt to try this with one of the previously mentioned problem websites as well:

195.157.47.11
and
cricinfo.com
