2007-01-27 23:59:00 | As Gmarmich said are there any firewalls on either? And can they ping each other? Could you please note what command I would enter to ping each computer ? I have ZoneAlarm turned on on one computer, but I will try turning it off, and I will also try disconnecting the internet as another poster suggested. Regards Digby

2007-01-28 00:00:00 | Please note I am using XP Home on each computer and I have shared a folder on each computer. Regards Digby

2007-01-28 00:02:00 | ping 192.168.1.2 from the machine with ip address of 192.168.1.3 and try from the other machine as well, switching the IP obviously. I suspect if you turn off zonealarm on both machines the sharing will start to work

2007-01-28 00:06:00 | Change both Workgroup names on both to MSHOME or to the same Workgroup name. If they're not the same at the mo. Right mouse on the my computer icon / properties on the desktop / computer name. Whats the name for both alongside Workgroup? And then if u want to use ZA, if ZA is on both PC's use the Network Wizard, or whatever its called in ZA to add the subnets etc. You go to the command prompt and type ping (whatever the ip addy is) It sounds like this is working since both PC's get on the net.

2007-01-28 00:47:00 | I checked each computers name and they are correct and they are both part of the MSHOME Workgroup. I have disabled ZoneAlarm for now till I get things going. Still no joy ! I tried pinging each computer and on one I got Transmit failed On the other I got Timed Out So this may be my problem. I can still access the internet from both machines so they ARE connected ! Regards Digby

2007-01-28 00:55:00 | Even tho u disable ZA, it doesn't always mean, it wont stop everything . Have u disabled ZA or just quit ZA?? Enable ZA again then go to the network part wherever that is and run the wizard for the network . I dont know if u haveta register, before u see this option as well . I gave up on ZA .

2007-01-28 02:00:00 | I'm getting a bit sick of firewalls, I have disabled them all with no success. So now I going to Unistall Zonealarm until I get the network working properly. I am convinced it must be one of my network settings. I listed my two IP configurations. Regards Digby

2007-01-28 02:03:00 | Well the net is ok coz u said both get on the net, its the file sharing on the network, thats the prob. Something is blocking this not the net side. So, 1/2 of it is working.

2007-01-28 02:19:00 | The two ip address configs that you listed are fine, they are given out by your DSL router. | gcarmich (10068) | |
2007-01-28 03:10:00 | So why wont it work. I can access the net from both PC's. I can see the computers via View Workgroup Computers, but it takes a while for them to come up. I can ping one computer OK, but not from the other one ! When I try to access folders on the other computers I get messages about not having permission. I am fast getting to the stage of thinking that XP Home is a piece of xxxx and thinking about getting XP Professional as that is geared to networking. It just proves to me how bad Microsoft are when such a basic system as mine won't work and how I cant get any help that actually works, after googling tutorials and asking on two forums ! But I do appreciate the help you have given me. It seems that lots of people are having these problems, and that it is all to do with SP2. Regards Digby
