520177 2007-01-29 03:20:00 Here is an interesting one for wifey.

Her Win98SE pc still has the windows auto update screen and unfortunately she went and downloaded 3 critical updates and now she cannot get connect to the internet.

Machine has IE6 and the first file she said was for a IE6 update but she could not see what the other 2 were for.

Tried logging onto Outllook Express for her but same thing: Modem being used by someone else or modem not connected.

Made sure all connections were in place and the entries in the IE & OE sections are the same as my 98SE machine.

The following is the history entry:

v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Tried this, but says to refresh screen, no movement.

We know Microsoft no longer cater for 95/98 and I cannot find her 98 cd.

Also tried Scanreg /restore to earlier good boot with no luck.

Has Microsoft done the dirty as this was the only site she has been into, besides the AVG 7.5 daily update.

Sorry to be so long winded, but any help would be appreciated by wifey.

520178 2007-01-29 03:31:00 And what kind of modem is this? dialup / ADSL?

I take it, this is when she dials up (or connects however), and she's not going
thru another PC to get on the net?

Someone didn't put a proxy in IE did they?

And what were the KB numbers to the updates she downloaded?

520179 2007-01-29 04:52:00 Its probably overwritten the modem driver.
Reinstall it.
And if necessary recreate DUN, Reinstall TCP/IP etc etc.

I don't know why people bother getting these updates. It doesn't help anything, and more times than not this sort of thing is the result.

All you need is a firewall, AV and some AS and you're fine.

Fixing when its not broken............:groan:

520180 2007-01-29 15:51:00 restart with boot disk then at the a: prompt type in c: then tap enter
then type in
cd windows
then tap enter
then type in
cd command
then tap enter
then type in
scanreg /restore
then tap enter

this'll give you a screen with FIVE previous versions of the registry .....hopefully one will be a version from before the 'update' use arrow keys to get to it then tap enter.........this will restore that earlier version of the reg.......then reboot.......you *should* be back to 'normal' if that all goes to plan.....

520181 2007-01-30 03:53:00 Thanks Speedy and drcspy.

Dead right: if it works don't play with it.

Zoltrix Dialup modem and it's been bl**dy good over the 10 years.

Still no luck and sorry about delay arranging holidays and recreation times.

As we have mentioned in the past, we have 3 crappy old pcs' and a laptop (almost scrap). Wife has the lappy back from daughter for semister, but afraid to use it.

Have tried the Scanreg /restore and it's run out of the 5 alowed.

Speedy the critical updates are: KB891711, KB896358, KB908519, Q823559, Q840315 and Q890175.

The first KB and Q are showing on my PC.

Belarc shows Win98SE UPDQ823559 and Win98 UPD329115 need to be re-installed.

If Microsoft have discontinued servicing 95/98 why haven't they blocked the auto update at their end.

Can updates be removed from the Add/Remove in Control Panel?.

Thanks again to you both.

520182 2007-01-30 04:36:00 I use this on Win98SE:

exuberant.ms11.net

Fixes plenty of silly and annoying Win98SE problems.

520183 2007-01-31 02:32:00 zqwerty, one of the other Win98SE machines here had a windows 98 SP2.1a, which makes the Windows flash screen a bl**dy awfull colour.

I am talking to you from wifey's machine now.

What I thought I would do was uninstall those upgrades one by one.

The first one KB896358 I uninstalled it and was asked to restart, which was duly done and the Dialup window appeared so I thought "what the h***" and here we are.

Whether we uninstall the rest? perhaps we should leave well alone.

Thanks again for all help guys.

520184 2007-01-31 03:04:00 I wouldn't trust these unofficial updates.

Something in it most probably screwed something up on your system.

520185 2007-01-31 03:17:00 Yes, a Microsoft Update.

From the SP2.1a Forum
"There is nothing unofficial in the pack that causes the error, rather official Microsoft files that install and replace files regardless of what is already on the system. They are supposed to check for version when replacing existing stuff but many times that gets complicated."

520186 2007-01-31 03:38:00 Thanks to you Speedy I already have HiJackThis on this machine and will run it accross the other machine, which is not used that often.

PaulD the SP2.1a Forum has some pretty ghastly colors too.
