521375 2007-02-01 03:38:00 Hey people,

Thinking of getting/building myself a new system. Thinking of AMD AM2 chip...
What are people thoughts on Motherboards.
Foxxconn,
Gigebyte,
Asus,
DLI
MSI,
Models???

Also, is there any point, or downside to getting a SLI MB if i'll never afford 2 video cards?

Cheers,

Vic.

521376 2007-02-01 04:32:00 Hi.

ASUS is the best overall motherboard brand, DFI (I assume thats what you mean by DLI...) is the best for gamers and overclokers.

Yes, the price is generally higher with SLI able mobos... but if you are not going to use it then there is no need.

Why are you going AM2? personally I would go Intel with the Core 2 Duo as that has more performance...

No
Yes.
Yes
You mean DFI? If you want to overclock.
No

But I'd use the ASUS.

No, don't worry about SLI.

521378 2007-02-01 06:50:00 the Gigabyte S-Series are rather good.

i just hope DFI have stepped up their game as their boards where ultra crap about 6 months ago.

521379 2007-02-01 08:39:00 What's wrong with MSI? I've had a few MSI products, and they're all good. qazwsxokmijn (102)

I have been running one for over a year and the ONLY problem I have is the NF4 NIC is a little dodgey at times, but not often... The_End_Of_Reality (334)

i used to work in a local Tech shop.

we had gamers comin in having them put in their gaming machines.

We had enough fail for us to drop DFI as a product all together. and recently had a flatmate build one, and ULTRA-D to be exact and the board was just DEAD.

A few of the people I know round where I live say they are the best... but I don't think they are ALL THAT... Gimmie an ASUS with good OCing ability and I will be a happy overclocker :D

It may be different now as I haven't gone near one in over a year but too many failures before that. So I went off them.

521384 2007-02-02 02:15:00 I recently built an AM2 system. Used an ASUS M2N-E motherboard and 4600+ X2 CPU. Nice MB, good price, latest chipset, sweet little gamer with a 7600GT card.

Had to upgrade the BIOS but the MB manual is very helpful there. The Athlon dualcore was a bit twitchy to start with. Needed a driver from AMD to stabilize it.

Not impressed with the CPU cooler mounting bracket. The CPU fan fell off the motherboard the other day. One of the two plastic lugs that mount the fan just snapped off. I heard it happen and hope I managed to saved the processor from meltdown. Won't know until I get it back together, and the way the warranty claim is going, that could be a while.

AM2 systems are cheaper to built than Intel and mine was running well for 3 months until this happened. Is bad design the hidden cost of an AM2 system?

I would be interested to know if anyone else has had a similar experience with the AM2 OEM fan mounting system.
