521356 2007-02-01 01:45:00 Hi all.

Recently I gave my old PC speakers to my kids, and bought myself some new Altec Lansing jobbies. (GT5051R). Two side speakers, centre speaker and a big bass unit.

Got home, unpacked, read the manual ( I've lost the cockiness of youth!), wired it all up, stuck the green wire into me lappie, and let rip.

And it sounds like **** :( Can't get any grunt out of it....no bass.

Read the manual again....and again....and excellent!...still sounds like ****. :(

The speaker's RRP was $299.00, so I assume I should get summat decent for that.

Now....here's where the fun begins. It came with a CD. BUT...there's nothing in the manual about the CD driver.

It's called "Music Player Driver". When I have a look at it, I get a thing called "Digital Audio Player Driver Setup" and below in big letters "MP3 PLAYER".

On me lappie? Should I be installing this? Do I need/want this driver if I ain't copying music to an MP3 player? Could this driver stuff up something already on there?

I'm using my lappie with kid-gloves...taking care of it so am really cautious about what cr....stuff I put on it.

I'm running WMP11, and although I've read some negative stuff about it, I was using it before on my old speakers and they sounded great. For this reason I'm assuming the sound card in the lappie is fairly ok too....

Question # 2. The manual wants to know what channel my sound card is? 6,4 or 2. Where do I find this? I've done the Control Panel thing but not finding what I need to find.

Cheers guys. Hope someone can help.

Tosh Satellite A100.

Under MultiMedia just one entry:

Realtek High Definition Audio

which I take to be the sound card.

Wouldn't have a clue what CD driver its talking about.

Yup, thats the soundcard.

There's 7 different A100's according to the Toshiba site (www.csd.toshiba.com) Which one have u got?

521360 2007-02-01 07:58:00 Which one? Have no idea to be honest.

It's gone from the DSE site, so no help there and the manual that came with it is generic for the entire A100 series.....

521361 2007-02-01 08:13:00 Well, not many laptops have the 3 audio jacks that the speakers appear to require to work.

Review here, which says "3 mini jack analogical inputs" wich I translate as 3 analog inputs"

521363 2007-02-01 08:29:00 Those speakers should be able to spread the single input around all the speakers, My Altec setup has an option to choose between a true 5.1 input or just a normal stereo signal, works killer either way (tbh the last time I moved the PC I only jabbed the green wire back in)

Anyway, looking at a bad pic on a review site I see it has a switch that looks similar, hard to make out but it apears that on one side you have 2/4 and I cant make out the other, so I will download the manual to see what the story is.

Your other optiuon is to get an adaptor that splits teh stereo signal into left and right RCA plags and just whack them into teh RCA plugs provided on the unit, Probally cost $2 at DSE (though look for an adaptor before going for a splitter cable, they usually add quite a few bucks for the bit of plastic and wire whuich serves no purpose)

521364 2007-02-01 12:12:00 Return the speakers and get a USB 2.1 or 5.1 speaker system and you won't have any problems, and for that price, you can get excellent quality.

Just make sure there's plenty of power and a good subwoofer.

You have one . . . .

Hey Goddie .

Yup, I have one . Maybe I'm expecting too much . . . but the previous speaker set-up worked well . If it wasn't for that . . . then I wouldn't have the expectations I do .

Guess I keep fiddling!
