521284 2007-01-31 23:08:00 Hi all,

I have a PC here that I have just added a 56K internal dialup modem to (HSF v2.13). It connects all fine, except once the handshake is completed and you are connected it continues to make this awful static-like noise the whole time until you disconnect again. I have turned the speaker volume to "Off" under the modem properties and put in the initialisation string "ATM0" with no change. It still actually makes the initial handshake noise even with those settings so obviously something is wrong.

The modem is an old one that hasn't been used for about 3 years, but it did work OK back then. I have installed the generic HSF drivers as well as the drivers off the CD for SuperVoice that were supplied with the modem. The computer is running Win98SE.

Before I go out and buy a new modem to try, I just wanted to see if anyone else had some advice.

Oh, I should add just incase it is significant, the machine doesn't have the standard audio working yet as I am having some fun trying to locate the correct drivers.

Cheers muchly. :)

I just shoved a headphone plug into the speaker socket on the modem and I have perfect silence during initial handshake and after connection. Obviously I cannot leave the headphones plugged in there so I might have a go at finding another set of drivers as well.

521288 2007-01-31 23:37:00 I would say the wrong drivers have been installed .

It's most probably conexant based .

This sounds ( . pcmech . com/forum/archive/index . php/t-63731 . html" target="_blank">www . pcmech . com) like the same prob you're having .

It could be ( . conexantsystem . com/products/entry . jsp?id=63" target="_blank">www . conexantsystem . com) one of these .

Buy a spare headphone plug and leave it stuck in the socket.

It could be (www.conexantsystem.com) one of these.Hmm ... well that led me around the merry-go-round and I am back where I started. I did install the generic Conexant HSF driver which resulted in the current problem. I ran the Conexant modem ID program which showed it had a vendor ID of 127A, a device ID of 2005 and the vendor name of Rockwell (which is now Conexant).

That headphone plug is looking very attractive right now. :p

Although, I might try to flog another 56K modem from a (now) spare PC that this current PC is going to replace and see how I get on with that.

Thanks for all the help so far. :)

521291 2007-02-01 04:08:00 Update.

Well the modem (PCTel) from the original PC has been installed and after visiting half the WWW I finally managed to find some working drivers. Behaves lovely with no extra noises and a good connection speed.

The amount of time I spent trying to get a *a* modem to install, be detected correctly on the right COM port and then finding appropriate drivers, you can see why just going out and buying a new modem is far easier.

Thanks again everyone. :)

Buy a short male to female audio connector. Plug it into the modem.

Put the cable out of sight.

Problem solved.

Not the nicest solution but will be the quietest. (until you want to hear it reconnect.)
