521248 2007-01-31 22:34:00 I'm after a programme that will copy specific folders or files onto an external hard drive as a backup. It doesn't need to compress. I just want to set up my backup so at the press of a button it knows which files to copy over and automatically override the ones on the external HD. naturally I'm stingy and don't want to pay for anything!! Any suggestions? Thanks ecurb (3669)

...is brilliant, capable of doing exactly what you want, free for personal use, BUT needs a little work to learn.

Microsoft's xcopy utility (comes with Windows) is similar but with a more limited set of features.

In either case, you will probably need to create a "batch file", activated by a corresponding desktop shortcut.

521252 2007-02-01 12:19:00 Drive Image XML will image a large drive in about an hour.

No more hassles with deciding what to backup--you're imaging the whole drive and can easily restore it, including your windows partition with operating system, using a Bart's PE boot disc with Drive Image XML on it.

It also has compression if space is an issue, but that will take longer, of course.

You can also restore the image to different size drives, just so they're big enough for the data.

I tell you, it's nice when your drive crashes and you can pop in a new drive and have the system restored and running again in about an hour.

Yep, it's free.

I tried Sync Toy a while back. It reported a large number of errors every time I used it!
