520981 2007-01-31 04:55:00 My wife is a journalist and conducts telephone interviews around the world, which she has to record so she can refer to them in the writing of her stories.
As the cost of calls was getting up there we decided that Skype would be a good idea, and recording the conversation to Hard Drive. However, we have not been able to figure out how to record the calls. Does anyone here have a solution for us?
Thanks in advance.

ANYTHING you can actually hear on your computer...and this also means Skype, can be recorded by Audacity.

I would recommend that you inform the other parties that you are recording them though..it is the law here and I cannot believe that NZ would let that happen either.

520984 2007-01-31 05:34:00 yeh i saw this thread and audacity came to mind immediately.......it's simple to use and free drcspy (146)
520985 2007-01-31 10:23:00 Im a fan of Goldwave... just thought I'd put it out there.. its similar to Audacity, but I just happen to prefer it Chilling_Silence (9)
520986 2007-01-31 12:28:00 The solutions above will work fine, but the easiest solution for her is Pamela, a Skype add-on . Go to Tools/Do More and you'll see the link--just click it to install and try it .

There's a 15-minute limit to recording on the free version, but the pay versions are not expensive, and for her professional needs, I'm sure well worth it .

You can start recording a call or have it automatically record all calls . It also plays a message you can customize at the start of recording such as "This call will be recorded for accuracy . "

Make sure you download the mp3 codecs as it instructs so the recordings are in mp3 to save harddrive space . They have to be downloaded from separate sites because of copyright restrictions .

520987 2007-01-31 16:15:00 why is that 'the easiest solution' ?.....specially with its time limit on recording ......why not just install and use audacity it's free and theres NO time limit on recording........ drcspy (146)
520988 2007-01-31 23:33:00 Thanks guys. I should remember to use my brain and go to google first but one gets such great support from the PF1ers.
I will evaluate all your suggestions and report to "her whose word is law"

There is no time limit on recording on the pay professional version.

Because it will automatically start recording all calls if you choose, or you can hit the record button.

Because it will automatically save the recordings under the name, date and time of the person you're speaking to.

Because it records the Skype call without requiring any audio source selection or changes.

Because it plays a notice that the call is being recorded, which may be required for legal and/or professional reasons.

Because it installs automatically from within Skype and there is no learning curve.

Sometimes "free" is only really free if your time is not worth anything.

By the way, I've been using Audacity for years--it's a great program, and for someone who needs to record an occassional Skype call, it's perfect, but that wasn't the way he described his wife's needs.
