520680 2007-01-30 10:36:00 My drive will no longer play DVDs. It still reads and burns CD-roms. When I put in a DVD the software (InterVideo WinCD6) opens but locks at the first screen. Nothing dramatic befell the computer between the last time it worked and now. It may be physically broken of course, but are there other possibilities to check before I buy a new drive? The computer is a Compaq Presario S6060AN. Thanks. bruce666 (8727)
520681 2007-01-30 10:47:00 Try to update video and sound drivers and install latest codecs (you can install DivX (http://www.divx.com/)). Rover (93)

No don't do that. You don't need divx to play DVDs.
I would try another DVD player first. Something like VLC (http://www.videolan.org/) would be best.
If you have a DVD in the drive can you use Windows Explorer and see the AUDIO_TS and / or VIDEO_TS folders on the DVD? And their contents?

520683 2007-01-30 11:15:00 Yes, the first thing to do would be to see if you can read the DVD using Windows Explorer.

I have found in my past experience that some CD/DVD combo drives have trouble going from CDs to DVDs- or vice versa.

Thanks, using Windows Explorer I can't open the D drive folder (the CD / DVD drive) at all or needless to say see or open any files inside it either. And I have found
(1) if there's a DVD in the drive when the computer is powered on everything locks, to the extent that nothing at all appears on the monitor. Opening the tray fixes that. (2) if I put a DVD in while the computer is doing some other task everything locks "not responding" and the microsoft error message send/don't send appears. No such symptoms happen with CDs.

Using Media Player I get a "not responding" when I try to click file/open to the D drive.

Whenever there's a DVD in the drive the read light beside the tray comes on and stays on indefinitely.

I have a fairly recent version of DivX.

The system info for the CD/DVD drive calls it ST380021A. I don't know if this is a clue to the make or not. No branding is visible on the exterior.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I will check out VLC and report.

Thats a hard drive not a CD/DVD.

Is the CD/DVD actually plugged in, in the case?

520687 2007-01-31 03:50:00 Seeing as you can even see the files on the DVD using Windows Explorer, It sounds like a hardware issue, possibly a faulty CD/DVD Drive.

DivX has nothing to do with your problem

If you can, take the drive out and try it in a different computer, install Video Lan and see if it can play DVDs in the other computer.

Thanks, and sorry; on closer reading in device Manager i find the CD/DVD drive is listed as:
HP DVD Writer 300n

Ah that's your problem then. Replace the drive.
I have seen quite a few of those models do the exact same thing.
Read & burn CDs fine but not DVDs.
