2007-01-30 03:32:00 | Hi I have collected all the best bits I would like for my new computer (upgrade from Celeron 533). Its come to more than my $1700 budget and was wondering what I could cut back on with out loosing too much performance. Here is my list: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400, 2.13GHz, LGA775 Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4 Intel P965 Seagate 320GB Barracuda 7200rpm 16MB Cache SATA2 XFX GeForce 7900 GS 256MB DDR3 RoHS 480MHz Samsung 1GB DDRII 667 PC5300 Icute S901-5G1-BB Middle Tower Case with power supply Pioneer Multi-format Dual Layer DVD Writer COMPRO VideoMate DVB-T300 I think buying the best you can at the time will mean the computer will last longer before you have to upgrade as did my Celeron. I am starting to do some video editing from my camcorder now and need something better. Thanks, asdex

2007-01-30 03:55:00 | Do you really need a 7900? That must be the most expensive component in the computer is it? | hcl (10925) | |
2007-01-30 04:30:00 | How about getting cheaper RAM or a cheaper case? or switching your system to AMD which of course means changing your CPU and motherboard but you would save atleast $30 on the CPU alone. | beeswax34 (63) | |
2007-01-30 04:32:00 | That lot looks to be about $2000 - Cut back on the graphics card and processor if your not going to be playing cutting edge games. Both could be upgraded in the future.

2007-01-30 04:42:00 | Well you can either do: Quote:asdex wondering what I could cut back on with out loosing too much performance. 0r Quote:asdex I think buying the best you can at the time will mean the computer will last longer. You either want to save money or get the best, you cant have both. To get the best you have to spend a lot of money, you either save money or get the best.Which is it? You need to make up YOUR mind what you want to do as any suggestion I make would properly get criticized and I am sick and tied of saying what I would do and then get ****ed on by people.:2cents:

2007-01-30 05:37:00 | Unless you are into gaming, there is no need for a 7900, a 7600GS will be shed loads for non gaming type stuff... even a 7300GC will do the job at ~$100 saving ~$200 on GFX card alone, and yes this can be upgraded in the future if you decided to get into gaming... The case is already a cheap one... PERSONALLY for video encoding the more RAM the better, 2GB is good for example but stay with 1GB to keep the cost down. Really CPU and RAM are what you should not downgrade if you do video encoding But it is that old story... you won't get the best unless you pay for the best... I paid $3500 for my PC a year ago and now it is quite outdated...

2007-01-30 06:40:00 | Hi thanks for your advice. Sounds like I don't need that much power. I play a few games now and again, mainly Freespace 2 and Call of Duty. I will have a look at getting a cheaper CPU and video card for a start. Thanks, asdex

2007-01-30 06:43:00 | A cheaper graphics card. More RAM. Ditch that PSU and get a Reliable one.

2007-01-30 21:39:00 | I have revised my component list after reading your advice. I think I can stretch to $1800.00 also. Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86GHz CPU (E6300) $330.00 Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P (Rev 2.0) Motherboard $260.00 2048Mb Corsair Value Select VS2GBKIT667D2 DDR2-667 Memory Kit $360.00 Gigabyte GV-NX76T256D-RH 7600GT SLI PCIE Video Card, 256Mb DDR3 $260.00 320Gb Seagate 7200.10 SATA2 Hard Drive $180.00 Pioneer DVR-111D Dual Layer DVD Writer $80.00 COMPRO VideoMate DVB-T300 $150.00 $1620.00incl I still need a case that is quiet when running including power supply. If anyone knows a good one? Still not sure on the video card with all the GTs and GSs but as its the easiest to upgrade it wont matter much. I expect I should get the best CPU I can afford as in 3 years you probably wont be able to get a 775 socket CPU to upgrade too. I know Im not playing cutting edge games but in 5 years time a good computer bought now will still be adequate for Windows 2012 (or Ubunta) Cheers, asdex
