521385 2007-03-16 15:55:00 I would be interested to know if anyone else has had a similar experience with the AM2 OEM fan mounting system.

not me...

i'd buy (have bought) an asus M2N-SLI deluxe
been good to me so far! i prefer the am2 cooler mount to the intel ones, it's easier. the bracket has been the same since skt754

So han, what did you buy?

521386 2007-03-17 00:28:00 Hey people,

Thinking of getting/building myself a new system. Thinking of AMD AM2 chip...
What are people thoughts on Motherboards.

I put together a system about last July using an AMD X2 3800 CPU, Gigabyte GA-51GM-S2G MB, and 1G of RAM. It has been going fine, the CPU fan is nice and quiet, and I also fitted a Northbridge fan for the hell of it. Also quiet.

In no way is this a system for overclocking, not that I want to, but if I was doing it again I would probably go for another Gigabyte MB with the ability to tweak the RAM voltage. Not that there have been any problems with my present board, which of course you couldn't get now anyway. Outdated already!

I'm using the on-board video, but fitted a sound card instead of using the Realtek HD on-board audio. A couple of reasons for that - wanted to play with the midi synth thing on a Creative sound card, and had some trouble with the mic using the Realtek system.

Also runs Linux in a dual boot setup.

521387 2007-03-17 01:07:00 For what it is worth- a general observation.
Assembling P Cs over the last few years, I have had problems with MSI and would be reluctant to use them again. Find Asus reliable, and did I hear recently they and Gigabyte have joined forces? Have used Gigabyte product as a value for money mobo but find the occasional failure, depending on the chipset used. The Gigabytes with Nvidia chipsets seem more reliable, stable, and a bit more expensive.
My pet hate is directed towards those AMD heatsink assemblies that have gone from three clip fastenings to one per side with consequential breakages. Mobo guarantees apparently not covered which means I have to buy another mounting assembly & do a repair myself.

521388 2007-03-17 02:11:00 haha, i've got a 745gram zalman 7900nt hanging by one of those clips! i prefer it to prevoius systems i've used simply because it's easier and faster. i'm yet to have a breakage.

i also find asus and gigabyte to be the best brand motherboards

EDIT:max weight for both intel and amd sockets is around 415 grams by memory
