521097 2007-01-31 22:00:00 And what are u plugging it into? The USB port or the USB hub??

Does it make any diff which one u plug it into??

Makes no difference which port I plug it into - same result each time (although got no message at all when I tried the port I normally have my mouse plugged into . . . ) .

I have a Tosh Satellite M33 - four USB ports . One is used exclusively for an external mouse and the other three are generally used for flash drives of various capacities and manufacturers and one of those regularly used to synchronise my Palm 650 (same one each time for this) . The are no problems with the flash drives .

I assume that there is only one way the HDD can be fitted to the enclosure, and that no jumpers are required to make it behave properly???

521099 2007-01-31 22:35:00 I would check the bios and see if it supports USB removable devices / drives and see if this hdd appears in the BIOS somewhere. Speedy Gonzales (78)
521100 2007-01-31 22:57:00 Interestingly, when I plug this external HDD into the PC at work (a Compaq Evo running XP Pro SP2) I get the same result as I do with the laptop . :waughh:

Perhaps it is the HDD enclosure that is the problem?? Maybe I need to try locating the manufacturer's website and look for a driver there? Being of Taiwanese manufacture (it's not a name brand that I recognise), of course, the recognising of a link on the manufacturer's site to download a driver may be a tad problematic . . . . if I can find the site to start with!!!

521101 2007-01-31 23:42:00 I would check the bios and see if it supports USB removable devices / drives and see if this hdd appears in the BIOS somewhere.I have previously plugged in and successfully used a 3.5" HDD (160GB) belonging to my niece, so I don't think there will be an issue at BIOS level...

What should I expect to see normally (blue-sky scenario)? Should it just install, find the right driver and then display as a new drive letter in Explorer? Should I then be able to format it at that time?

521102 2007-01-31 23:45:00 johcar,
I had this problem when I installed a plugin carriage in the pc to have 2 more hard drives. They are Sata drives though.Had to use another program like Acronis Disk Director and name them with it,then windows saw them.Haven't had any trouble seeing any external IDE drives into USB ports.
Not sure if that will help you.

Not sure if that will help you.Cheers Neil - this is an IDE drive, not that that should make any difference - I have Partition Magic 8.0 installed, which looks like it does the same sort of things that Acronis DD does, but my issue is that I can't actually see the external HDD to do anything with/to it...

Try it on another couple of PCs - if they all give the same (unknown device) result, then you may want to look at a warranty claim on the caddy.
