521669 2007-02-01 17:10:00 Seems there's a glitch in Vista . . as an update install anyway .

To those who feel they NEED to upgrade the OS on an existing machine, now there's a silly twist . According to the company, (read: M$):

" . . . . (the) Vista upgrade can be done only from within Windows XP . . . . "

. . . . . with no allowance for starting fresh with a clean installation simply by providing the old version's disc .

It now looks like there's a way to fix this inconsiderate problem .

The process involves installing Vista twice . . . . to all those previous victims of upgrade unpleasantness who can never tell what gremlins will pop up because of random junk left in the course of overwriting the old code . . . . . this is a godsend .

first as a trial version,
then do it again with your registration number .

A hassle, but worth it for those who want to start clean .

So it goes . . . . . sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you .

521671 2007-02-01 19:19:00 Why not just not "upgrade" to Vista (I suspect you'll find that you actually lose capabilities over what you had on Windows XP)? Imagine this as an upgrade: no cost, greater security, faster, more software applications (all free), and the ability to control your own fate - no threat of being a "pirate" inadvertently. That's what you get with Linux. Get Ubuntu ( http://ubuntu.com ) - they'll even send you installation CDs - postage paid!! It even looks better. dlane (11847)

Vista has speech recognition hole
news.bbc.co.uk

Microsoft has admitted that speech recognition features in Vista could be hijacked so that a PC tells itself to delete files or folders.

Although the risk appears to be minimal.

Yeah! I just read that same article . . it's a hoot!

. . . and I like being hijacked anyway!

Here's a C/P of the article from a site to which I have some rights to do so, as this is only the teaser for the whole article anyway:

The trouble started when I played a track called "Die, Computer, Die" by the Malwares . . .

Well, that didn't take long at all . The consumer version of Windows Vista has been available for what, 48 hours now, and we've already gotten our first confirmed exploit .

It seems that Vista's Speech Recognition feature (and I use that term loosely) can be used to verbally subvert the OS . "I recorded a sound file that would engage speech command on Vista, then engaged the start button, and then I asked for the command prompt," ZDnet's George Ou wrote .

"When I played back the sound file with the speakers turned up loud, it actually engaged the speech command system and fired up the start menu .

I had to try a few more times to get the audio recording quality high enough to get the exact commands I wanted but the shocking thing is that it worked!"

Alerted to the exploit, Microsoft's security response team investigated it and confirmed that it does indeed work .

Somehow, I think Vista is gonna open a lot more doors for fun and entertainment for users/hackers/thieves/warez sites/ne'er-do-well's .
