522818 2007-02-05 02:02:00 Huge thanks to Tukapa for choosing pretty much 90% of everything below.

But anyway, this is the computer I am soon going to order:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Seagate 250GB SATAII hard drive 16MB cache
Transcend 1GB DDR2 533 Ram
Asus P5VD2-MX motherboard
Asus DRW-1608P3S DVD writer
XFX 7600GT 256MB video card
1.44MB floppy drive
CMV 943A 19" LCD monitor 8ms/AOC 193FW 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor 5ms
Logitech R20 2.1 speakers
Genius EasyTouch Optical II keyboard and mouse set
Windows Vista Home Premium

$1994 incl gst and shipping from Auckland to Christchurch.

Remember how i wanted a computer between $700 and $1400...well here it is

I am still deciding on which monitor to get (both are listed, opinions?) Tell me what you think.

Also, I read ADSL2 is going live here in NZ in March, when this happens will all isps have access to it? Or just Telecom? Because I am desperate to go from Telecom to Xnet but I don't want to miss out of ADSL2...also how do you tell how far away from the exchange you are?

I think all ISP's will have access to it, but I don’t think it will happen this year, it may go in the exchanges this year but I think it will be a couple of months to a year before we see ADSL2 plans.

also Unbundling the local loop should also happen this year

Ask Telecom very very nicely :D

522820 2007-02-05 02:34:00 Out of those two monitors I would take the AOC but only if I had to.
I would look at a Viewsonic or Samsung if possible.

522821 2007-02-05 02:37:00 Remembering I'm already $600 over my initial budget --Wolf-- (128)
522822 2007-02-05 03:21:00 The AOC and they've just bought out a new model to replace that one - make sure you get the new version. pctek (84)
522823 2007-02-05 04:14:00 $2000 is way too overpriced for that rig, i remember a friend building this exact setup with a AM2 X2 Dual Core 4200 instead of a E6300 for $1100, no monitor tho kingping (11473)
522824 2007-02-05 04:45:00 Lol! Lets see how many other people say that. --Wolf-- (128)
522825 2007-02-05 08:14:00 I have a few queries about your config:

Asus P5VD2-MX motherboard

That motherboard is for micro-atx cases [spec (www.asus.com)]. I'm guessing you're using a m-atx case? Or do m-atx motherboards line up with normal atx screw holes?

Transcend 1GB DDR2 533 Ram

I take it that this will be 2 x 512MB modules so you can run it in dual channel mode.

Also, I read ADSL2 is going live here in NZ in March, when this happens will all isps have access to it? Or just Telecom?

According to this article (www.stuff.co.nz), "Telecom will meet with wholesale customers this week to consult them on where and when it should roll out the technology". So if they are "consulting" with wholesale customers then they must be going to let all ISPs offer it (probably for a small fortune until other ISPs can install their own equipment in the exchanges/cabinets).

I am desperate to go from Telecom to Xnet but I don't want to miss out of ADSL2

Remember how expensive ADSL was when it first came out back in 1998/1999 and how we have only just got decent data pricing on ADSL? My guess is that you probably won't want to move to ADSL2+ anytime soon given that it will be sold at a premium. What have you got to lose by jumping from Xtra to Xnet? Xnet currently waive the churn fee for changing to them from another ISP and they don't lock you into a long-term contract so you could easily go back to Telecom should you feel the need to have ADSL2+ if Xnet doesn't like Telecom's terms for providing it. Disclaimer: I am currently a happy Xnet customer.

522826 2007-02-05 09:05:00 I can't answer the first question, maybe Tukapa can? As for the second one, I THINK it is just a 1gb one, not 2x 512mbs. --Wolf-- (128)

Not that exact setup then is it :o
Dual Core 4200+ CPU is cheaper than the E6300.
Most likely had a budget brand of mainboard with VIA chipset.
Wouldn't have had an XFX graphics card.
Should I go on?

mATX board will fit in ATX case.
