522760 2007-02-05 00:52:00 Hi all,
In the last week my computer has suddenly developed a funny. Perhaps others have seen it and know a fix.

On bootup it will only proceed as far as the screen that gives options such as: (The wording below is not exact but the options are.)

Press F8 use system config (On pressing this all apears to run normally. I get my multiboot options etc and every things works as normal.)

Press F9 to do post routines then choose operating system (On pressing this once again but after doing the post routines I get my multiboot options and can continue on normally.)

Press Delete for Bios access. This also appears normal.

This has only in the last week stated happening. Prior to this it would just do a normal fast boot with the Post routines activated. You had to be quick enough to enter one of these Press F?? options while the screen was up if you wanted them. If you didn't it continued on to the input user screen etc before stopping.

For some reason it now at all times requires input before proceeding past the options point.

Oh the OS is XP Pro with all service packs and updates installed.

Ideas anyone?

522761 2007-02-05 01:50:00 The little lithium cell which allows the BIOS settings to be stored is dead.

Its a little "silver button cell about the size of a farthing. :D It's 20 mm diameter, and 3.2 mm thick, for modern people.

You will probably notice that the date and time are wrong in Windows: that's because that cell keeps the hardware clock going.

It's probably a CS2032 cell, but check before buying a replacement. The holder can be broken if forced ... it does hold the cell firmly. Have a good look at it before graunching it. ;)

The halt you get allows you to tell it to set the default settings, and it can carry on from there. But it forgets those settings when you trun it off. NO harm is done, and it will all be back to normal when the cell is replaced. (Endet the BIOS setup then, and make sure you save before exiting it.).

You must have the later more modern version. On my machine it's huge, more the size of a groat. :-)

K9, although Graham L is most likely right, is it possible that anyone has fiddled with Settings?
I'm not sure where you find them in XP, but I'll guess that if you can find a "boot.ini" text file, find the line "delay = x" and edit the digit(s) at "x" to read "0" something nice will happen.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, Graham (or anyone.) I don't have an XP machine handy.

522763 2007-02-05 04:47:00 A groat? That's a day's pay (fourpence) for a labourer. :D

People used to say that the 2032 cell was the size of a 10c piece, when it was actually closer to the size of a 5c piece. I was delighted when I compared one with a farthing once. ;)

It's not getting far enough to be bothered about XP settings. It's at a very early stage in the POST code in the BIOS.

Well they're right now then aren't they?

Yes, there's a few people I've employed that I'd like to pay by giving them a fourpenny one.
