522754 2007-02-04 23:31:00 Hi

Quick question about Ram - what do these brand companies (Packard Bell, Compaq, HP, Dell etc) do to their ram requirements to make you pay twice the amount for ram that will be compatible with their systems?

I am wanting to upgrade a Packard Bell M22100 for a friend. It takes PC2100 Ram. Now I can buy a generic Kingston PC2100 512MB stick of ram for $80 or I can buy the "compatible" stick of ram for $170 odd.

What gives?

Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Ta.

522755 2007-02-04 23:50:00 Packard Bell is probably using the Kingston, lol.

Use Everest or another program to analyze exactly what ram you have (frequency, etc.), and match that in the Kingston version and you should be ok.

Also check Kingston's site for compatibility info.

522756 2007-02-05 00:45:00 Yep - the Packard Bell uses Kingston. I did get the model number for it but don't have it with me now.

I presume if I bought PC3200 it would just drop the speed back to PC2100 as per normal?

Which brings me to another question - does the DDR2 ram work the same way? For example if your mobo supports up to 533Mhz DDR2 Ram can you buy 667Mhz or 800Mhz DDR2 ram and it will just clock itself down as per the original DDR ram did?

Cheers all.

522758 2007-02-05 02:04:00 It's the "genuine spares" thing. (Try buying genuine spare parts for a car, and you'll think that Packard Bell are very reasonable ;) ). The manufacturer buys extra parts to be supplied as replacements. They will guarantee that parts they supply will work in a computer they have made. It costs money to keep spares; the price covers that.

Of course you can buy cheaper parts; Kingston do have a good reputation.

522759 2007-02-05 10:47:00 atleast it isn't a dell, they like to modify parts so that you HAVE to buy their parts.

then again they are selling to n00bs who will just buy a new one when viruses ruin their system because they don't have any antivirus software

no offence intended
