| 522712 | 2007-02-04 21:11:00 | Hi all I have a somewhat low-spec PIII system that I built myself in 2001 (it was high-spec, then!), that still fulfills my needs more than adequately . Over the Christmas break, I decided to have a 'clean-out' and do a complete format/re-install of WinXP . This went absolutely swimmingly . . . until, after getting everything set up the way I wanted it, my 6-year-old 40Gb HDD bit the dust, taking out the OS :annoyed: Now, I'm not too worried about any data, as I'd backed everything up ad nauseum in preparation for the reinstall, and the drive was old . My setup had the OS on one drive (40Gb), and my data on a second one (80Gb) . (In fact, I also had a partition with Win98 on it . . . but that's by the by . ) With the size of today's HDDs, though, I'll only need to get one new one to cope with everything . My Q: way back when, I was told to have the OS on one partition and data on a second, so that you can reinstall the OS without disrupting the data . Is this still the case? Or does it not matter? If I have do have separate partitions, what's a decent size for WinXP Pro? Or do I install the OS's to my 4-year-old 80Gb drive, put my data on the new 250Gb, and cross my fingers that the older one lasts for a couple of years? :waughh: Any advice would be much appeciated thanks  |

Yes data is not disrupted as you put it . Most applications aren't either . There are one or two exceptions though and they would have to be reinstalled due to pointless registry entries usually . Beats having to do the lot again . Also makes it easy to do a Ghost Image too . My XP partition is 10Gb, 3 . 6 used of that . |
