522994 2007-02-06 09:57:00 um........speedy i'm very well aware of how one enables or disables ALL the video display properties.....however are you tryin to tell me that my 128mb video card with its own gpu and ram doesn't do the work when it comes to putting all the 'eye candy' on screen.. ? I'm sure that if one had a very minimal say 2mb card then you'd be pushin it uphill to run the eyecandy drcspy (146)

Well, I spose it does, since you won't see anything on a screen without a video card will u ?

522996 2007-02-06 20:08:00 I'm just curious as to why you'd torture yourself running either Win2k or XP on only 256MB of RAM. Yes, both will work, but they'll page stuff to disk like hell.

Do yourself a favour & get another 512MB at least and you'll notice a huge difference.

522997 2007-02-07 00:48:00 Gidday lads,

Firstly, thanks to all of you for the suggestions, some food for thought there.

It is already running XP OK, and I have trimmed down the starting apps and processes. I was merely curious as to whether it will run on 2K better than XP. In this situation, the laptop runs 24/7/365 logging data form a weather station. The PC then uploads this data to the net. This is the only function of the machine and it requires nothing else on the HDD except for the A/V and OS.

If anyone else has any furhter suggestions please let me know. The reason I am not keen to purchase additional RAM is that I have no idea how long this machine will run for until it kicks the bucket, so am trying to get the best performance possible without spending any cash on this machine..:D

TIA

522998 2007-02-07 19:47:00 No problem, I thought it was being used like a normal workstation.
Provided you've stopped any unnecessary services and revert the desktop to classic mode, XP should run just as well as Win2K.

Is it a public accessible website (for the weather information)

523001 2007-02-08 05:11:00 Gidday mate,

Yeah it sure is accessible...right here:

home.clear.net.nz

Over the years my interest in meteorology and weather events have led me to construct a reasonably accurate 1-Wire based weather station .... it is now working very reliably and provides good local data for my surrounding neighbourhood. It should be noted its an amateur site, and should not be used in case of emergency or life threatening situations! lol:waughh:

Also for other locals with there own home weather stations check out:

homepages.paradise.net.nz

Hope the links were useful?:)
