| 523009 | 2007-02-05 22:39:00 | My desktop (XP prof) is my main computer My laptop (XP home) is used as a backup - I never want to get on the Internet with it going through the desktop and prefer on the very rare occasions that I use it to have a direct connection. I use a local network to connect them and have had trouble in the past culminating in me buying a new cable which seemed to cure the problems. But today no joy - I cannot connect the 2 computers. My desktop tells me I have a fault and tried to renew my IP address -- why? (& failed). I have been through the Windows wizard to install the network program on both computers (even used the 3.5 floppy system on the laptop) but again nothing. I didn't get rid of the old network before starting this. I keep getting messages telling me to see the administrator as there appears to be a fault on the connection setup. I am the administrator and am out of my depth. Tell me what to do - PLEASE. Tom |

| 523010 | 2007-02-05 22:58:00 | 1. Don't use the Network Wizard, it doesn't work. 2. Put the ips in manually, thru the LAN properties / TCP/IP. (or obtain ips if youi're on adsl). 3. If u don't have a hub or CAT 6 cable, you need a crossover cable. 4. If u have a firewall (besides XP's), u haveta add both to whatever firewall u have. 5. Make sure the Workgroup names are the same. What are u on? dialup on adsl? |

Para 2 - Ah you have lost me here - I haven't a clue what this means or how I do it. Para 3 - Yes I have a cross over cable - almost new and it DID work. Para 4 - I think I am OK here. Para 5 - Done Para 6 - I am on dialup Tom |

| 523012 | 2007-02-06 01:33:00 | Para 2 - Ah you have lost me here - I haven't a clue what this means or how I do it. Double click on the LAN icon, on the taskbar /properties / TCP/IP. (for both) Whats it on? Automatic, or use the following ip address? What doesn't work?? The network or the networked PC cant get on the internet? Or both? Enable ICS on the main PC (if u want the networked pc to get on the net). Then on the networked pc, under use the following ip, type in something like 192.168.0.2 for ip, 255.255.255.0 for subnet, 192.168.0.1 for default gateway. And whatever ip addresses you use for your ISP. Whoever it is down the bottom for preferred and alternate DNS server. |

Using the info I had stored I went into DOS on both computers - used the ipconfig command to find out my ip address and copied the numbers very carefully into the ip and subnet blanks. In neither computer do I have a number for the gateway. I also checked that I had no firewalls running (including windows). Again I tried the network but no luck - I still have to check with the administrator for permission or action. I have never bothered with administrator etc as I am the only person who uses the computers and I wanted to keep things simple!!! The only thing I find not working is the network between the two computers. The desktop gets on the internet with no problems and I suspect the laptop will still do the same when on its own. I did notice when I was fiddling earlier today that the laptop could acccess the internet when in fact I had gone on using the desktop (which makes me think the cable is OK). I didn't really understand your last para (not your fault - just me) so I took no action on that. I really appreciate your help on this Speedy. Tom |

In neither computer do I have a number for the gateway. So what ips did u put in on both ? Whats on both now?? 192.168.0.1 for the main PC and 192.1068.0.2 for the other/networked one? On the networked pc the gateway is the main PC( so on the networked PC under gateway u put 192.168.0.1). What ISP are u with? The only thing I find not working is the network between the two computers. The desktop gets on the internet with no problems and I suspect the laptop will still do the same when on its own. I did notice when I was fiddling earlier today that the laptop could access the internet when in fact I had gone on using the desktop (which makes me think the cable is OK). The networked PC will get on the net if you enter the ip address in (and the gateway IP), under the networked PC ( as above) as it needs something to go thru to get onto the net). Which is why u put 192.168.0.1 in under its (the networked PC), LAN Properties/TCP/IP. I didn't really understand your last para (not your fault - just me) so I took no action on that. You mean the ISP DNS server? As above what ISP are u going thru?? There is a FAQ here somewhere to do with networking. And in order for the network between PC a and b, to work, you have to create and share a folder on each. Call it something like downloads or something on each. DON'T share the whole hard drive. |

| 523018 | 2007-02-07 22:35:00 | Well I have my network connection back. To those who offered help many thanks especially Speedy who has been amazing - he seems ready to help anybody. But in fact I was out of my depth. The more I got into it the more I realised I didn't know what I was doing and needed infant school tuition to help me. Eventually I did what was sensible - called in my favourite technician who was very patient with me - spent over an hour sorting out the mess I had made, gave me lots of extra tuition, and left notes on what had been done. Cost $40 which I thought was pretty good - especially as he was at my house and managed to call round in less than 24 hours! I understand a lot more now, but promise I WILL NOT FIDDLE. Needless to say I have another problem I need to sort out - but that's another thread unless I manage to fix it. Tom |
