522984 2007-02-05 21:35:00 Hi guys,

Just inherited a new (well old but new to me) laptop that has had XP installed on it. Its only got 256MB RAM and has (according to System info) a x86 Family 6 Model 11 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel 1327Mhz chip....

I have a full set of Win2K Cd's, do you guys think this machine would run better using 2K as its OS? If so, is it easy to install 2K over XP?

TIA!

522985 2007-02-05 21:52:00 No, u can't. You'll have to do a clean install of 2k to install it.

It should run better with 2k, with only 256mb.

Just don't install anything like Symantec Internet Security or AV, on it, if its going on the net.

Yup thats what it means. You'll have to format it.

You can install XP over 2k of course, but u can't go backwards (install 2k over XP). XP won't let u.

There's only one CD for 2k BTW, not a set (if u have more than 1 CD).

522988 2007-02-05 23:13:00 partition it then install 2k to the 2nd partition then you'll have dual boot and lose none of yoru data....also I'm doubtful that 2k will run 'much' better than xp.....hey i've only got 256mb on this machine now, (p4 2.4ghz) and it runs real well..... drcspy (146)

Without the eye candy it will. You could even run 2k on 64mb and it'll run fast enough. I've done it before.

Well dual boot MAY work. Usually you install the earliest then the latest version of Windows.

522990 2007-02-06 01:51:00 If you would rather keep the existing XP installation, then why not just trim down on all the eye candy and run it in Classic mode? You should be able to improve the performance a bit that way.

Don't forget to see what is loading on startup and get rid of all un-necessary entries.

Err no it isn't.

You disable it in XP by right mouse on my computer on the desktop / properties/advanced/performance option/settings/visual effects.

You can use XP without any colour at all (besides icons).

It has nothing to do with the video card.
