523513 2007-02-07 12:15:00 I've got 2 hard drives 1 is 160GB the other is 40GB..i want to use the larger one for storage and the smaller one to operate from...will it be safer like this ?

Also After my recent hassle i decided to reinstall XP...before this when booting up it used to ask which hard drive to boot from as both had xp on them ,now it only boots from the larger drive...ive tried going to the BIOS and selecting which drive to boot from but it makes no difference..how do i boot from the smaller drive ?

523515 2007-02-07 13:48:00 If you want to boot OS from a smaller drive you’ll need to reinstall your XP once again. But there is a workaround. You can install Acronis True Image (www.acronis.com) and clone your data from one drive to another. But if I were you I will install OS on the faster drive (I think your new drive is faster then old one). groggmann (11872)
523516 2007-02-07 13:54:00 ...will it be safer like this ?no how could it be, only means if you lose your 160Gb data drive you can still run windows Rob99 (151)

How can i find out which drive is faster ?

523518 2007-02-07 15:22:00 no how could it be, only means if you lose your 160Gb data drive you can still run windowsI think the point he was asking, and which I think is true... is that the storage drive gets less wear and tear by running less frequently. Therefore its lifespan should be greater, or in his words, safer. Correct me if I'm wrong. Greg (193)
523519 2007-02-07 15:38:00 No i was thinking if the smaller operating drive gets infected with a virus or whatever and i need to reinstall XP again (something i seem to have to do every 6 months or so) then its less bother because all my stuff is stored on the larger drive which will hopefully be unaffected. russell108 (7499)
523520 2007-02-07 15:50:00 Ah. Well I'm not an expert, but I'd say yeah, technically your system is somewhat safer. But a master boot record virus will probably kill anything on both drives. Or rather, kill access to any data on either drives. However worst case scenario I think the contents of the second drive could be recovered. Greg (193)
