523184 2007-02-06 09:56:00 Hi,

I'm in the market for a new PC Notebook and need advice on which one I should get. I'm selling my Mac and buying a PC laptop, because I'm moving to France and can get $1600 for my Mac as is, and Macbooks are too expensive. But I'm not too familiar with PC specs anymore (it's been about three years since I've used a desktop PC regularly).

Any advice on what I should look for? I do graphic design, so use the Adobe Creative 2 Suite, Macromedia Studio 8, do a bit of 3D work and video editing and such.. I know I need to be careful with processors and graphics chips.. I'm thinking I'll need an international warranty too? I'd also like to stay away from Compaq and HP, because every technician I've ever spoken to says they're terrible for breakdowns.

Thanks everyone,
Hin :-)

523185 2007-02-06 10:27:00 Hi duckgoesoink welcome to PF1.
Hope we can help.
Very sad news, to state the obvious, I take it your short on cash since if your going to be video editing when your overseas your going to have to buy what comes standard on your machine which would almost make your comment an oxymoron. Will you be supplied with all the software you have been using when your overseas or will you have to re-purchase it?

Haha yeah I had to expect a comment like that (plus I've also read many of your posts, and you're a total mac-nut who must be earning commission). I already have the PC equivalent of (most of) the software I've been using. I don't do nearly as much video editing as I do print work, web work and animation (otherwise I would obviously buy a dedicated avid system). Plus I use Final Cut Pro, not the STUPID iMovie which comes standard with Mac OSX, so will switch to maybe Avid Xpress or something lighter but still professional grade.

Thanks for the reply, but it really didn't answer my question or help me at all. I love my mac but can't afford to take it or buy another.

Get as much ram as you can afford
Get one with a mobile chip, for cooler running and longer battery life.

No problem, for the record I am not on comision I just prefer the platform,
What is your budget for your new laptop + RAM?

523190 2007-02-06 19:06:00 Thanks for your opinions guys. I shall seriously look into Asus now. What do you think of Acers comparitively? How important is a dual processor (I've seen AMD Turion 64x2 and Intel Core Duo and Core 2 Duo)? Can you get away without one if you bump up the other specs?

My max budget right now would be maybe $2300. I plan on maxing out my RAM in a few months time (1GB for now seems ok - at the moment I'm only running on a G5 1.8 ppc with 1.25GB RAM and it's perfect).

Winmacguy - then is it really necessary to do so much macbashing? (Nearly every post of yours I've read tries to persuade the entire earth to switch to mac. It'll never happen and you know it, even though macs are far cooler. PCs can now do the same things with the same performance for a cheaper price. Plus PCs have the flexibility of open architecture. But that's irrelevant to this thread.)

523191 2007-02-06 21:29:00 core2duo seems to be all the rage at the moment for laptops. should be able to get something decent for that money. plod (107)
523192 2007-02-06 21:31:00 ASUS not Acer, Acer are average whereas ASUS use top of the line hardware.

Just about anything you can get for $2300 will perform as you expect it to. I would get the fastest Intel you can for your budget.

If your going to upgrade RAM later just check how many free slots it has.

edit:something like this, although its not Intel it still has a mobile CPU

Yep I know you said ASUS, I was just asking your opinion also on ACER. So it looks like ASUS is the best choice then. Anyone else have a differing opinion?

And thanks for the link - I did find that one too after ASUS was first mentioned. A shame they don't have it at the New Plymouth store and won't transfer it either. The AMD Turion 64 x2 processor this one has is comparable to the Intel Core Duo isn't it?

I think I may drop my budget to about $2100 - it seems you can still get a good one at that price..

Thanks for the help guys :-)
