| 524460 | 2007-02-13 10:48:00 | Every so often I have 103 *.bak files in my Recycle Bin They have names like: Hotmail - Inbox.bak, Hotmail - Sent Items.bak etc.. I am running Win XP Pro with SP2 & fully to date & using OE 6.0 / IE 6.0 What I want to know is: A. Why are these *.bak files in my Recycle Bin? ( has MS stuff up another windows update patch ( like the time when everyone got the weird ~ file on there desktop/ My Documents folder), which cause these files to end up in the Recycle Bin. B. Are they safe to remove? (I only have around about 713MB of free disk space on my C drive so I need to empty my Recycle Bin ASAP! ( I have removed a set of them already ) (it seems every time outlook express asks if I want to compact of my mail folder, that I end up with these *.bak files) |

I haven't used OE or IE in yonks, so I don't know what setting may be in them, but that's where I'd start, look for export, backup or restore settings. Next look at Disk Clean up settings, then System Restore. Do you have CCleaner? If not, grab a copy, install and run, you'll be pleasantly surprised how many MBs of files Windows and it's cohorts and other programmes squirrel away on your hard drive. |

| 524464 | 2007-02-13 20:42:00 | A. You answered your own question in B. Since when did Outlook Express begin taking the liberty of moving its BAK files the Recycle Bin? I just did a test and didn't find any in mine. :confused: Wait a minute, now I come to think of it I can't remember ever having any Outlook Express BAK files. I'm being cheated somewhere.... :dogeye: |

I think I know where most of disk space has gone...., I just need to find time to clear out some of my e-mails....... By the way - after all the time you spend on PressF1 isn't it time you know to upgrade your browser/email programme? ;) When It’s not broken, why fix it ;), anyway why upgrade to IE 7.0/ OE 7.0 when what I already have does me fine, plus I don’t use IE that much I use Firefox (1.0.7) for most of my web surfing. Since when did Outlook Express begin taking the liberty of moving its BAK files the Recycle Bin? It started happening about a month or so ago (not that long ago) |

| 524467 | 2007-02-14 04:00:00 | This happens when you have Compacted messages in Outlook Express. Basically it reads your old files and writes what it needs to a new dbx file. Then it moves your old dbx files to the Recycle Bin. |

| 524468 | 2007-02-14 06:00:00 | Like I said, I have never found old DBX files in my Recycle Bin and I compact the folders regularly. | FoxyMX (5) | ||
