524411 2007-02-13 08:33:00 I have a case where I need to run a wireless network between 2 buildings. I haven't yet checked, but imagine that with the distance, reception after going through the walls will be pretty low. Can I put the wireless router on a window sill with another access point on a window sill of the other ie: line of sight? Would then need cable from the access point to the pc? What hardware would do this? wotz (335)
524412 2007-02-13 11:03:00 How far apart are the buildings?
Is there anything in between them or is it open space?

There are access points available that can operate in a 'Wireless Repeater' mode that would do what you want.
You would need two access points, one in each building, preferably as close together as possible and line-of-site even better.

I have used these (www.snapper.net.nz) before and they work really well.
They even work with other brands of access points, well Belkin anyway, so if you already have one access point you only need one of these.

Got a job tomorrow in Auckland and will probably use more of them!

Forgot to say that you can also get bigger aerials for those access points if needed.

btw I would only use Linksys access points

524414 2007-02-15 08:59:00 Thanks for that. Been there tonight and it looks like 1 access point with a better antenna should do the job. Is that level 1 brand any good? wotz (335)
524415 2007-02-15 09:21:00 I would go for a Linksys Rob99 (151)
524416 2007-02-15 09:22:00 You already said that. This is required for a 3 month period, so saving a few $$$ is important, provided the product performs. wotz (335)
524417 2007-02-15 10:23:00 I've not had any problems with LevelOne.
As I said earlier, I had to use one yesterday.
Customer already had a Linksys WAP with a bigger aerial attached but it wasn't enough to reach the upstairs bedroom.

Chucked in one of the LevelOne WAP-0006 set to Universal Repeater Mode and set it up with the existing WPA key and all done!
