524202 2007-02-13 00:20:00 If anyones using Avast out there, can they please tell me if I need a firewall installed as well? I had a couple of problems with Sygate so I removed it, then I installed Avast and removed AVG.

I couldnt find info of Avast including a firewall, so I'm guessing I need one, but for some reason I havent gone and done it.

524203 2007-02-13 00:26:00 Avast doesn't come with a firewall AFAIK. I'm using Avast Pro. There's no firewall in it.

There is a version of AVG that comes with a firewall but I don't think its free, like the free version of AVG.

Try Comodo (www.personalfirewall.comodo.com)

It's free.

524205 2007-02-13 02:22:00 Yes, you do need a firewall . What issues were you having?

I use Avast and Sygate with no problems at all .

Well IMO Comodo is WAY better than ZA.

1. Its free. for life, once u get the code from them and activate it. Some parts of ZA u pay / have to register it.

2. ZA had an annoying thing of turning off its proxy service. When it stopped so did u. Haven't had the same prob with Comodo.

3. ZA is just as bad as Nortons/Symantec's firewall. Resource/memory hungry.

$. Once u install Comodo if u let it configure the settings for u, its fine. All u have to do is reboot and if u want to configure it if ur on a network, just go to tasks and select define a new trusted network down the bottom.

Click on next it should bring up the name of your network card press next again. Thats it. You'll be back on your LAN.

524208 2007-02-13 03:10:00 I've kicked Kerio to touch (for now) in favour of Comodo. In my 2nd week of use and absolutely no issues at all including networking ones (stating the bleedin obvious, it being a firewalll, for networks, an all).

Ta for the heads-up, BTW Speedy.

PS. I tend to set such things as application access/behaviour/monitor (whatever your particular firewall calls app & .dll & activeX, etc, control) to manual/learning mode for the first week or so. That way you can allow the apps, such as web browsers, email and AV updates, etc, access to the net(work) on a case by case basis. I still don't allow some apps access without coming through and getting cleared me allowing the firewall them access.

Paranoid, yep, but only with certain inherently crap software.

524209 2007-02-13 03:25:00 No worries MP :)

The only version of Comodo that did have probs was the 2nd or 3rd release. It crashed but that has since been fixed. I think the latest version (or the previous version before this), also addressed some issues it DID have with Avast. (slowness or something), which has also been fixed.

The only prob I have now, is I have to turn Comodo off, if I want to play a game called Off Road Arena on the network (it's only for a LAN not for the net), as Comodo doesn't pick this up when I go to run it. And doesn't ask for access.

And it doesn't detect that I want to play this game with the other PC here, so can't open the ports (whatever they are). The TCP/IP option in this game freezes (and I have to reboot). But like I found out yesterday, quitting Comodo fixes this prob.

It's good that these guys also have a forum, where people can post the probs they're having, and they're pretty quick to address any problems anyone may have.

524210 2007-02-13 21:11:00 I've been using Comodo, ZoneAlarm, and Kerio for a while now on different machines. I've had a lot fewer issues with Comodo than I have with Kerio or ZoneAlarm, so Comodo is my pick of the free firewalls.

I've recently downloaded the latest version of Comodo and installed it on a brand new machine and it didn't require a registration number where the previous version did.

Did have a LAN problem with Comodo until I found that I had accidentally on purpose blocked svhost. Fixed that and away it went.
