525331 2007-02-17 03:37:00 Time to retire the Win 98 file-chewer, which means relegating the 3 yr old XP machine to #2 and getting a new #1.
Which is fine, I was looking at pc specs, but my husband has taken it into his head that he wants a Mac, based on a PC World article a few months ago which said that you could emulate a PC pretty well on a Mac running XP.
Now, apart from the usual issues:
- poor software choice
- poor FREE software choice
- can't maintain the hardware yourself
Does anyone have any comments (no gratuitous obscenities please, I've already said them all)

525332 2007-02-17 03:49:00 I would suggest that you use your dollars to buy what you need.

Think about what applications you use. Think about your current investment in software. Think about the learning curve. If your husband can handle this then let him go buy a MAC.

525333 2007-02-17 03:51:00 Thanks - the problem w the learning curve tho is that it'll be me who does the learning. I'm the only person in the house who doesn't stand back and shreik when the computer isn't working by telepathy. annie (6010)
525334 2007-02-17 03:58:00 It will either be Vista or OSX, both will be a learning curve.

I am a PC nut, but would recommend an Apple. Unless you have programs where there is no substitute for in OSX.

The software choice is not that poor and the same with Free software. There is heaps out there, As for maintaining hardware, ram harddrives, cpu's are all the same as well as video cards. You do have less of an upgrade path then if you built it yourself, but I doubt your 98 machine was upgraded much either.
The above is all based on personal experience. I do have use of a new mac laptop through work which I dual boot with XP, but never use xp as of yet

.

Not at all. If they are going to a proper PC shop they can request XP to be installed on it.
Just because Vista is out doesn't mean you HAVE to have it.

525337 2007-02-17 05:38:00 I love my Mac after Windows 98 & XPSP2 ~ I'm not young :) but didn't have a problem getting used to a Mac. No problems finding free or shareware software either. My older friend, as in many years retired, didn't have a problem changing over either. Neither of us would change back to Windows.
Men, sorry, some men, have a problem with reading manuals, women don't. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with just how logical the Mac OS is.

525338 2007-02-17 05:59:00 We have had Macs before, and they were lovely. But when we got our first PC in about 2000, it was so much fun playing games, and being able to fiddle with the hardware (which I have upgraded - new CD/DVD burner, more RAM, new graphics card and the usual PCI card slot insertions). I'm a bit reluctant to go back and miss all the fun annie (6010)
525339 2007-02-17 06:56:00 I had never used a MAC until yesterday when I had to configure a MacBook and a G4 (I think that's what it was) for a wireless network.
It was pretty easy and if you know how to use a computer then I don't think it would take long to learn to use a MAC.

525340 2007-02-17 07:49:00 Looking at your original post I think you have two computers at this time.

A Win98 file chewer and also a three year old XP machine.

Now I think you want to replace the file chewer with a new computer of some type and keep the XP one.

Possibly I am wrong?

On that premise let hubby get want he wants ( a MAC ) and you can use the XP computer.

When (or if) husband finds certain software does not work as expected you can say, "I told you so." Let him pay the bills for upgrading and/or software for the MAC. Don't forget you getting similar cash for upgrading the WinXP machine as well.

Tell him you need a bigger hard drive to store recipes on....... The pics of this roast do not stand out well here so I need a 21" monitor. Now I need two monitors to compare this roast with that roast. This will cause you to require a dual output which means a new video card......... and etc.

I hope you realise that this is a little tongue in cheek.
