525885 2007-02-20 18:38:00 I used to swear by Ghost 2003 until I came to restore one day and it stopped halfway through the Restore saying tersely "invalid file". I then had a corrupted C: drive and a corrupted image and a long reinstall of everything. Most proprietary backups are no good because the image they produce is dependent on Windows which is possibly corrupted if a Restore is needed. I tried Zipbackup but it produced a file size problem. What is needed is a fast backup that runs in its own bootable DOS and produces ordinary copies of files that can be accessed and copied back to disk(s) individually or in total. But I haven't found it yet!

525886 2007-02-20 20:10:00 But... Sounds contradictory. What's the case? I'm also still perplexed by what's the best, least expensive and easiest method of backing up.

No, it's not contradictory if you understand what Godfather is saying. Which is that he chooses and adds the files to wants to burn to DVD, then, if there is still room left, he adds some more until the disc is full. Then he burns the lot to disc.

Clear as mud?

As for the best and easiest method of backing up, I just use a batch file to copy the entire contents of my Data partition to another hard drive daily then burn all the files to DVD once a month or whenever required.

You could probably have avoided that anguish if you had ensured that Ghost verified the images as valid after creating them and before relying on them.

525888 2007-02-20 21:22:00 My :2cents: ...

I use Microsoft's SyncToy Powertool to sync folders on my computer with a USB HDD
Every so often I use the WinXP Backup to create a backup file, which is then written to DVD

If the backup image is more than 4.7GB, I use a splitter program to make 4.7GB-sized chunks.

I've found the WinXP backup to be reliable when I've needed it.

I use Ghost to make an image if I'm rebuilding (and yes, I do verify the backup before deleting the data!)

525889 2007-02-20 21:44:00 I still believe the best backup system is to clone a complete hard drive to another plug-in hard drive using caddies .

The backup can be tested by booting the backed up drive, and can also be used immediately in case of some emergency or problem with the main drive .

It can also be used for testing out new programs, upgrades etc before committing the main drive .

525890 2007-02-21 05:36:00 I love Microsoft DPM (Data Protection Manager) for Windows Server.
Although it's not a "complete failure" solution, it's great for automatically incrementally backing up changed files, and keeping several previous versions of said files.

What I'd really like to see is some sort of equivalent to this in the open source / Linux world. *sigh*

Have a look. Unix has had many backup packages written over nearly 40 years. You'll probably find the one Microsoft copied for its latest one. :D Or even a better one.

525892 2007-02-21 07:19:00 I have not plucked up the courage to Back Up Yet. Still have not decided between Nero & Windows.

A question tho. If I do a backup on one of them, do I have to continue using THAT one?. For instance, do a backup on Nero, & Do the recover with windows? Does that make sense? PJ

C drive has 9.45 GB used.
D drivw has 1.02 GB used.

Not a lot yet. I assume that I would need to backup C & D? Even tho D is a partition of C ? PJ.

525893 2007-02-21 08:59:00 I was rather hoping to inherit one of these, but it was not to be,the way to go in my opinion, which I must admit isn't worth much.

If you use Nero backup software then yes you need to use the same.
If you just use Nero to copy files manually, then files can be copied off the DVD one at a time as needed.
