525721 2007-02-19 07:51:00 I see that the World is divided up into 6 Regions. America/Canada being "1". Aust/NZ being "4".

My Comp DVD is set at "1"

Maryann's is "Not selected".

How does one know what region a DVD is? It is not marked on the DVD Nor the cover. Unless that is what the little box, with a picture of the World with ALL in it. Yes??

Isn't there a programme that allows all regions to be played without using up the 5times setting alterations? PJ

525722 2007-02-19 08:05:00 Usually the zone is on the back of a DVD cover (within a pic of a globe).

Thats it the globe with ALL in it, which means any zone. If its a Zone 1 or 4 or other, it'll show 1 or 4 within the globe. (It'll also say PAL or NTSC), on the back. If its in this format as well.

Just be careful as 1 is US. And if u change it too many times, it'll lock it after 5 changes.

This (http://www.dvd-x-player.com/) is what I use.

BUT, it isnt free.

525724 2007-02-19 09:49:00 If you right click on your DVD icon in My Computer then select properties, then select the hardware tab, next select your drive in the window, then the properties button at bottom right of window, then the DVD region tab and there it well till you what region you have selected and how many times you have left to change it.

525725 2007-02-19 10:10:00 This program (www.remoteselector.com) will check your DVD drives settings for region setting and changes left.

The world is split up into 8 DVD regions:

Region 1: U.S., Canada, U.S. Territories
Region 2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East (including Egypt)
Region 3: Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
Region 4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
Region 5: Eastern Europe (Former Soviet Union), Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
Region 6: China
Region 7: Reserved
Region 8: Special international venues (airplanes, cruise ships, etc.)

I myself use VLC player (www.videolan.org) to play my DVD movies and shows. Basic clunky interface but you will get used to it.

525726 2007-02-19 11:54:00 I use DVD Region Killer (on WindowsXP) which is free and seamlessly gets around region issues (as long as ur actual drive is region-free.)

I thought this was more or less compulsory for Windows users but since people are having trouble...

525727 2007-02-19 12:38:00 And if all else fails you could always reset the little counter that keeps track in the drive itself. Not going to say how but just that it is possible. Big John (551)
525728 2007-02-19 19:13:00 Why be so reticent? If Region Control had any standing in NZ the Warehouse wouldn't be able to sell so many parallel imported R1 and R2 disks.
I believe the drive in question is a Liteon so search for the LtnRPC software.
