| 525482 | 2007-02-18 00:31:00 | I had KDE on my Debian Sarge machine; it worked fine until recently when the screen started to flicker intermittently then it progressed to the stage where all I had was a grey-green (not sure I'm a bit colour blind) image, kind of barred, like a venetian blind. X settings looked OK, so, I removed KDE with "apt-get remove kde* --purge". This worked and I was left with TWM, as a window manager, which is a bit "retro", to say the least. But I am not getting the fault described above. So, I installed fluxbox, which was OK for a bit, then it started doing the same thing as kde did. So, I've removed it. Back to good old TWM:eek: Any ideas about what I should do to fix it? I have a kvm switch between the 2 computers, checked the connections, all good. I can still connect to the linux machine using Putty, SftpDrive or Filezilla. But sometimes it's nice playing around with a Linux GUI. |

| 525483 | 2007-02-18 04:15:00 | The reason you have not had any suggestions is as we all know, all PC problems are caused by MS and you are of course using Linux which never has any. ;) |

The monitor works better than fine with the other computer. Jen, I wouldn't know what's exciting in /var/log/XFree86/log.0.log. Here's an output, if you can see anything that could help? There's a lot of stuff there; if you'd rather not that's OK. |

| 525487 | 2007-02-18 08:14:00 | Hmm ... the forum is doing odd stuff when I tried to edit your post above to use [ code ] tags to stop the really wide horizontal scrolling it had caused. All it did was remove half of the log, and then it wouldn't save with the new tags. Anyhow, here is your log I managed to salvage from your original post: XFree86 Version 4.3.0.1 (Debian 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge3 20070107160638 jmm@galadriel) Release Date: 15 August 2003 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6 Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.18-3-686 i686 [ELF] Build Date: 07 January 2007 This version of XFree86 has been extensively modified by the Debian Project, and is not supported by the XFree86 Project, Inc., in any way. But thanks anyway pctek:thumbs: Actually, from time-to-time I've had some dodgy things happen with the xserver; once, in my early "play around with linux" days I totally lost a Mandrake install (or so I thought. The basic install was still there but I didn't realise that I could get it from the command line). Basic linux is rock solid; and really that's all I need as it's a back up for my Windows stuff. But being curious, I must try out a GUI:groan: |

What happens if you bypass the KVM and hook the monitor up directly? Thanks Jen. I reconfigured the xserver using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86:nerd: . Then I reinstalled Fluxbox; and after leaving it churning away overnight, it seems fine:D So, fingers crossed. I wonder if I dare try one of the heavier desk top environments, ie KDE or Gnome yet. I'm getting to like the clean simplicity of Fluxbox:horrified |
